Thursday, February 2nd, the Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers meet for the second and final time this season. The teams played on January 18th with the Grizzlies winning a 115-114 nailbiter.

The Grizzlies are completing a back-to-back set having lost 112-122 to the Blazers on Wednesday while the Cavaliers played Tuesday losing 97-100 to the Heat.

All-time the Cavaliers have the advantage of winning 31 of 52 matches. Also, last season the Grizzlies took both contests versus the Cavs.

*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Wednesday, February 1st. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Thursday, February 2nd.

Memphis Grizzlies

Danny Green made his return from the ACL injury also donning the Grizzlies jersey for the first time. Green got 10 minutes of run offering a bit of everything with 3 points, four rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

While some suggest he could be part of a trade package to shore up the Grizzlies’ bench depth his presence is a valuable asset for Memphis in the locker room.

Having won championships on different teams he knows what it takes especially during adversity, so it would be surprising for him to be traded — at least not before being with the team through their 2023 playoff run.

Stats

Offensively, the Grizzlies score 116.7 points per game ranking seventh overall.  Memphis shoot 46.9% from the field ranking 20th, and 34.4% from the perimeter ranking 23rd.

Memphis still owns the best opponent field goal percentage of 44.9%  while limiting opponents to 112.3 points per game and 35.6% ranking ninth and 12th respectively.

John Konchar (concussion) is questionable for Thursday. Steven Adams (PCL strain) is out indefinitely. One positive on the injury front is Danny Green is expected to make his return on February 1st versus the Blazers.

Cleveland Cavaliers

I cautioned about putting too much stock into the Cavaliers’ record because of how many elite teams they’ve played with watered-down starting lineups.

Cleveland’s record against winning teams is now 14-15 following the loss to Miami and again nine of those victories occurred with the opponent’s top player or key starters out.

Miami’s finish to the match Tuesday drives home why playing against the best lineups matter and will factor in the postseason when the young Cavs will face experienced teams.

It’s not to suggest the Cavs can’t become a powerhouse, but why it would benefit them to face the full starting lineups instead.

Stats

Offensively, Cleveland scores 111.2 points per game ranking 27th while shooting 48.4% from the field and 36.5% on the perimeter ranking sixth and 12th respectively.

Cleveland tops the league for opponent scoring limiting foes to an average of 106.8 points per game. Cavs opponents shoot 46.6% from the field and 37.1% from deep ranking eighth and 27th.

Dylan Windler (ankle) is out indefinitely.

Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:

I pointed to the Cavaliers’ youth and inexperience and in fairness, the Grizzlies are also young plus have struggled recently on the road.

The difference is Memphis got experience last season winning a playoff series and pushing the eventual champions to six games despite their star being out injured.

Taylor Jenkins used five bench players between 10 to 19 minutes, and although the Cavs have the rest advantage there is reason to be cautious.

Specifically, in the last 14 games Cleveland is 6-8 with four of the wins against winning records. However, that quartet was each missing its best player and at least two starters.
