Mets vs Cardinals Prediction

The St. Louis Cardinals will host the New York Mets for game one of their four-game set this Thursday from Busch Stadium

Mets Preview & Projected Starter

New York moved to 55-66 after taking two of three from Pittsburgh. The Mets were about to win their second series of the month in Queens this week, and they’ll attempt to bring that success to STL this weekend. T he New York offense is scoring 3.98 runs per game, while batting .238, with a .318 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.39 ERA, with a 1.35 WHIP.

Jose Quintana (0-4, 3.03 ERA, 20 Ks) will get the call for New York. The veteran lefty pitched well again versus Atlanta last week, holding them to one run through six innings, but he still earned the loss due to a lack of run support. It’s been pretty unfair for Quintana, as he signed on with a contending team in July, only to watch them blow things up shortly after. Quintana has pitched four straight quality starts, and he’ll look to earn his first victory in St. Louis, where he played last season post-trade deadline.

Cardinals Preview & Projected Starter

St. Louis moved to 54-67 after taking two of three from Oakland. The Cardinals hit a low by being silenced and blown out at home by Oakland, and they’ll attempt to bounce back here. The St. Louis offense is scoring 3.97 runs per game, while batting .258, with a .328 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.64 ERA, with a 1.49 WHIP.

Adam Wainwright (3-7, 8.78 ERA, 39 Ks) will get the ball for St. Louis. The longtime Cards pitcher was passed around by the in-state rival Royals in KC last time out, allowing a season-worse eight runs in just one inning to drop his third straight decision. Wainwright has been bullied in both of his August starts, allowing fifteen runs combined in just four innings against Kansas City and Colorado, and it’s sad to see. The ‘washed’ chants are only getting louder for the veteran, and it’s unclear how he’ll come out here.

Cardinals Player Trends & Props

Nolan Arenado collected four hits in the game two win, and he’s St. Louis’ leader in batting (.287), home runs (25) and RBI (84).

Paul Goldschmidt has totaled multiple bases in three of the last four games, and he leads the Cards in hits (128), with splits of .278/19/62.

Wilson Contreras brings a seven-game hit streak into this series,  and he’s posting a line of .261/13/59.

Nolan Gorman is second on the team in homers (24) and RBI (67).

• The Cardinals have covered the run line in each of their last seven night games against NL East opponents.

• The 'Inning 1 OVER 0.5 runs' market has hit in each of the last six games between the Mets and Cardinals.

• The Cardinals have led after 5 innings in each of their last three games as underdogs.

Corey’s Free Pick

Two clubs who’ve underperformed this season will face off, but one of them has truly struggled throughout the season, and their trotting a vulnerable, aging pitcher to the mound on Thursday. Adam Wainwright finds himself in a similar position fellow veteran Madison Bumgarner was end, as he’s clearly taken a step back and he’s a target at this point. A formidable outing from Wainwright would be nice to see, but it may end up getting dark early for him again with the heavy swinging Mets coming to town. Mets starter Jose Quintana has been sharp through a month of action, and they’re surprisingly the more trustworthy team here. The Over could be in play with the big bats on both sides, but let’s roll with the Mets for this game one matchup.
