Mets vs Yankees Predictions

On Tuesday night, another edition of the Subway Series will begin, as the New York Mets visit the New York Yankees. While these teams split their first two meetings of the year at Citi Field, both will be hoping for better results against their crosstown rivals at Yankee Stadium. In this matchup, both teams are sending some of their best pitching talent to the mound in what should be an entertaining affair.

New York Mets Predictions

The New York Mets enter this two-game Subway Series on a two-game losing streak. They dropped the final two games of their three-game series against the Boston Red Sox, and they sit in fourth place in the NL East. But a disappointing season for the Mets may not hurt their fans quite as much if they can win the second chapter of the Subway Series against the rival Yankees.

Taking the mound to start this series for the Mets is Justin Verlander, who enters with a 4-5 record and a 3.47 ERA. Verlander had one of his best starts of the 2023 season in his last outing, where he threw eight innings and gave up just one run to the Chicago White Sox. If the Mets are going to win this game, Verlander is going to be a huge reason for that success.

New York’s National League representatives could also do with a better offensive start than usual against Domingo German. The Mets have been shut down in the first inning more than all but one team so far this MLB season. Putting some early runs on the board for a change would give Verlander a cushion to work with, and would give the Mets some much-needed confidence heading into the rest of this game.

New York Yankees Predictions

The New York Yankees enter Tuesday night’s Subway Series opener on a three-game winning streak. They swept the lowly Kansas City Royals at home over the weekend and enjoyed a day off after that sweep before this series could commence. But the Yankees are still in a tie for last place in the AL East going into this series, and they need to win games like this one to bolster their hopes of making the postseason.

For the Yankees, Domingo German will get the start on Tuesday night, as he looks to deliver his first win since his perfect game against the Athletics at the end of June. In his three starts since that perfect game, German has allowed eight runs in 16.1 innings of work, an average of about a run every other inning. Against a Mets team with some power in their lineup, German has to be better than he has been so far in July.

Something else that needs to be better for the Yankees is their offense, which ranks 19th in runs scored in MLB this season. While that is one spot better than the Mets this year, that is a huge disappointment for the Yankees given how highly-touted their offense was going into this season. While missing Aaron Judge due to injury for most of this season has not helped them, one man should not be able to derail an entire offense the way Judge has, and the Yankees need to prove they can still get the job done at the plate against Verlander here.
