MLB draft lottery: Detroit Tigers get No. 3 pick in first round

The Detroit Tigers have the sixth-best odds to win the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft. The Tigers were a disappointment in 2022, finishing 66-96. They can drop as far as the 12th pick or move all the way up to No 1. Dylan Crews, Chase Dollander and Jacob Gonzalez are considered the top college players. Max Clark, from Franklin, Indiana, and Walker Jenkins, of North Carolina, are the best high school players eligible for the draft, which takes place Tuesday night.

The MLB draft lottery is Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET live from the winter meetings in San Diego. Detroit Tigers get the No. 3 pick in the first round.

Washington Nationals, Oakland A's, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers have at least a 5% chance at winning the lottery. The three worst teams have the same odds.

The first six picks in the MLB draft are chosen by a lottery. The lowest the worst team in league can draft is seventh overall. Milwaukee Brewers have the lowest odds to win the lottery at 0.2%. Detroit Tigers get the No. 3 pick in first round.

MLB has instituted more rules to try to curve tanking over time. Large-market teams are prohibited to select in the top 9 in consecutive years. Small- market teams can't select top-9 in three consecutive seasons.

The 2023 MLB draft will take place in Seattle. It is likely to be from July 9-11 during All-Star Weekend.
