MLB Monday Betting Picks
The boys were raring to go on this great Monday, and Tanner kicked off the show by taking the Atlanta Braves runline against the Los Angeles Angels. He’s supremely confident in the Braves regardless of who they play given their dominance in all facets of the game, but it definitely doesn't hurt that they’re taking on the Brewers on a day where Griffin Canning starts.
Charlie Morton hasn’t been excellent for the Braves—he only has a 1.42 WHIP—but Atlanta’s bullpen has been excellent all year, and their offense has returned to the dominant form it was at pre-All-Star break. The new rule of Ride the Line is to take the Braves’ runline any time it is available for a fair price, and that starts today.
Grant’s first pick is the Tampa Bay Rays’ moneyline against the New York Yankees. He’s looking to Tyler Glasnow to outshine Domingo German on the mound, especially with German’s recent struggles—that includes German giving up at least three earned runs in five of his last seven starts and posting an ERA over 7.00 during that stretch.
Grant also noted that the Rays’ offense has started to return, while the Yankees are still lifeless even with Aaron Judge back in the lineup. The Rays are also coming off a momentous 8-2 win over a strong Houston Astros team, which is another reason to back them.
Tanner’s second pick is the Chicago Cubs’ moneyline against the Cincinnati Reds. He believes that the Cubs’ high-powered offense that leads MLB in post-All-Star scoring will bring a level of regression to Andrew Abbott, the Reds’ young stud.
Grant vehemently disagrees and loves the Reds in this spot. Abbott has given up two or fewer earned runs in five of his last six starts, while Stroman has a 7.99 ERA in July. The Reds’ offense is also coming back to life after a brief slump thanks to Elly De La Cruz, who just had four hits in his last outing.
Grant’s second pick is the Houston Astros’ runline against the Cleveland Guardians. The Astros, notably, are third in the league in scoring since the intermission and have outscored the 11th-place Guardians despite playing two fewer games. JP France is also having a much better campaign than Noah Syndergaard, who was just shipped out of Los Angeles after stacking many poor performances.
Tanner believes the Guardians aren’t a great baseball team and said the bottom teams in the AL East and AL West could win the Central. He likes the pick and is in favor of fading the Guardians more times than not.
Tanner’s final pick of the Monday show is the Boston Red Sox’s moneyline against the Seattle Mariners. Nick Pivetta is on the mound and will look to continue his hot play against young star George Kirby.
Grant is also ten-toes-down on this pick. Pivetta, despite bouncing back and forth between the bullpen and starting duties, has a 1.29 ERA this month, while Kirby is over 4.00. The Red Sox also outpace the Mariners in every major offensive category post-All-Star break and are excellent coming out of the bullpen, making this plus-money bet a must for the co-hosts.
Grant’s final pick is the Colorado Rockies +1.5 vs the San Diego Padres. Austin Gomber is starting for a Rockies team that has a better home record (24-28) that is better than the Padres’ road record (23-29), and that’s actually a great sign for Rockies fans. Gomber has a 3.00 ERA over his last six starts, which is both impressive at altitude and better than the Padres’ starter, Seth Lugo, during the same stretch.
Tanner likes the Rockies because of their ability to win at home and also because the Padres are capable of falling flat on their faces more times than not.
