Moroney's Cups double hopes

Mike Moroney is crystal clear with his wish list for last year's Melbourne Cup runner-up Emissary this spring.

Having defeated all bar Gold Trip in the 2022 Cup, the trans-Tasman horseman is again setting the bar high for his talented stayer as he chases another success in 'the race that stops a nation'.

"We're just after a very small double, the Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double," Moroney quipped.

The Geelong Cup winner has returned in great order and has impressed at three home-track Flemington jumpouts ahead of a spring kick-off.

"He had another jumpout over 1200m at Flemington this morning and was good," Moroney said.

"He's been pretty slow maturing and he's six months behind as well, so he really should be at his peak this time around."

Moroney hopes the ultimate gear change can allow punters to see the best of talented import Alenquer, who was poor in two runs as an entire in the autumn.

"He had another jumpout this morning, the way it ended out Ollie (Damien Oliver) ended up riding him and he trialled really well," Moroney said.

"He ran second from back last over 1200m and trialled up really good. He's a different horse now he's gelded, he's got to do it race day yet, but the signs are pretty good.

"Sometimes at that age the gelding operation knocks them around, but it hasn't knocked him around at all, he's come through it really good.

"We fielded a couple of offers from overseas to take him back to stud but they were trying to buy him cheap to stand him there, we decided to geld him and have a go as a racehorse - that's what we bought him for."
