New York Mets Betting Preview

Last season was another disappointing one for the New York Mets, as they squandered a ton of preseason hype and finished in fourth place the NL East. The Mets ended up trading Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer after the start to their season went poorly and they never recovered. Expectations for the Mets are much lower going into the 2024 season.

New York’s National League team brought in some pitching talent in the offseason once again, albeit lower end talent. That may not be any better than their acquisitions before last season, but the Mets are never shy about trying and failing. Here, we break down the upcoming season for the Mets and make our pick for their season win total on the year.

Offseason Transactions

Key Additions: Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, Harrison Bader

Key Departures: None

The Mets brought in a couple of starters in Luis Severino and Sean Manaea, both of whom have seen better days. Severino’s career has been marred by injuries on a pretty consistent basis, while Manaea was positively mediocre last year. Their pitching rotation will depend on that duo staying healthy and finding a way to be effective consistently.

Offensive Outlook

The Mets finished in the bottom-five in the National League in runs scored last season. It is hard to imagine that changing in 2024, as they are unlikely to get more than the 46 home runs that they got from Pete Alonso in the middle of their order. Alonso is who he is at this point, but it would be great for the Mets if he could hit better than the .217 that we saw a season ago.

Pitching Outlook

New York was a middle of the pack team in the National League in terms of runs allowed. They have managed to not keep Verlander, Scherzer, and Jacob deGrom over the last few years and they will hope that Severino and Manaea can help them turn things around. While we are not overly optimistic that will happen, that is what the Mets are hoping for.

Positives & Negatives

The biggest positive for the Mets is the fact that they have an owner who is always willing to pull out all the stops to try and improve the team. That hasn’t yielded much success yet, but Steve Cohen is always on the hunt to try and improve the team. On the negative side, this roster is seriously lacking in talent after not hanging onto their top arms last year, as their offense is not good enough to make up for losses like that.

New York Mets Season Win Total Pick & Prediction: Under 81.5

The under is the right play for the New York Mets in 2024. Their pitching staff is not all that good, while their offense is even worse. The Mets will finish below .500 this year, fail to make the playoffs, and continue their stretch of ineptitude under Cohen, just as they experienced before Cohen’s arrival with the organization.
