New York Yankees vs Chicago Cubs Prediction 7-8-23 MLB Picks

The Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees meet Saturday in MLB action from Yankee Stadium. This will be the second installment in a three-game series over the weekend. In the Friday matchup, the Cubs secured a shutout win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs played the Brewers this week, winning two games for a split in the four-game series. On Friday versus New York, Chicago bagged seven hits in a 3-0 victory. Starter Jameson Taillon went 8.0 frames with one earned and two walks.

It’ll be Drew Smyly in the start for the Cubs on Saturday. Across his 17 starts this year Smyly is 7-5 with a 4.10 ERA and 76 strikeouts over 90.0 frames. Smyly is 60-52 with a 4.10 ERA in 256 career games (173 starts).

New York Yankees

Over on the Yankees’ side, they also managed a four-game split in their last set, theirs versus the Orioles. On Friday New York couldn’t figure out Taillon and had just two team hits. Starter Carlos Rodon logged 5.1 innings with two earned on four hits and two walks.

Gerrit Cole will take the mound for the start on Saturday. Across his 18 starts this year Cole is 8-2 with a 2.79 ERA and 118 Ks in 109.2 innings. Cole is 138-73 with a 3.21 ERA in 285 career starts.

The Cubs are 5-2 in their last seven versus the AL East and 6-14 in their last 20 Saturday games. The under is 5-0 in Chicago’s lat five Saturday games.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are 8-1 in their last nine Saturday gams and 88-39 in their last 127 in game two of a series. New York is 59-28 in their last 87 versus the NL Central.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll stick with New York. I’m not thrilled about picking the Yankees for anything these days however, so I’ll probably stay away. Cole is 0-1 in his last pair with five earned in 10.2 innings on 15 hits and three walks. As for Smyly, he’s got 10 earned over 7.1 innings in his last two starts. On Friday the Yankees had a pretty rough showing on offense. If there’s good news it’s that the bullpen posted a decent game (3.2 innings; one earned; three hits; two walks). New York has got to get the bats going in this one. I’m not touching it, but if the Yankees can plate a few runs I think they’ll be okay.
