Newcastle welcome Chelsea to St James' Park on Saturday afternoon as the Premier League returns following last week's international break.

Newcastle head into the weekend and their intriguing match with Chelsea as the slight favourites for victory on Saturday, with Betfair pricing their victory at 6/4.

Chelsea are the marginal underdogs ahead of their trip to Tyneside, with the same bookie pricing their victory at 13/8, while a draw is priced at 12/5.

The two teams headed into last weekend's international break in contrasting form following the previous round of Premier League matches.

Newcastle suffered back to back losses in the week heading into the break, falling to defeat in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund before being surprisingly beaten by Bournemouth in the league on the Saturday.

Eddie Howe's side most recent loss halted a lot of progress the Magpies had made following a slow start to the league season which saw them lose three of their last four matches.

The Tyneside club's first league loss since the opening weekend of September, a run spanning five wins and two draws up until their surprise defeat on the south coast a fortnight ago, leaves them seventh in the table heading into the weekend.

The Magpies' home form remains impressive though, having won six of their last seven matches in all competitions at St James' Park, conceding just once across those victories.

There's currently a six point gap between Newcastle and the top four, though despite Howe's side being favourites for Saturday's match, a run of just two wins in their last six matches in all competitions could instil an in-form Chelsea side with confidence ahead of this weekend's meet.

Mauricio Pochettino's side started the current campaign slowly, much as they spent the entirety of last season, winning just one of their opening six league matches this time around, but have managed to turn the tide on what is now looking like a progressive season.

The Blues have lost just one of their last eight matches in all competitions, and since their last defeat have booked their place in the quarter final of the Carabao Cup, won 4-1 away at then-league leaders Tottenham then battled to a 4-4 draw against then-top of the table Manchester City.

Despite the good form, the West London club still find themselves down in 10th place heading into the weekend, but are only four points behind their opponents on Saturday, and three points off the top eight.

Newcastle took four points off Chelsea last season, ending a run of seven defeats to the Blues in their previous eight meetings.

Howe and Pochettino have met on the touchline eight times before in their managerial careers, with the Argentine leading 6-1 in wins over that period.

Chelsea's last two matches have brought about 13 goals, though Newcastle have proved tough to beat at home and don't tend to concede many goals in at St James' Park.

A score draw could be worth a punt for Saturday's match, which Betfair are offering at 3/1. For those willing to be more precise, a 1-1 draw is available with the bookie at 5/1, while a 2-2 stalemate is priced at a tempting 10/1.
