Just three points separates the two teams going into the weekend, in what could prove to be a crucial match as both teams chase a top four finish and Champions League qualification for next season.

Newcastle head into Sunday’s encounter with the benefit of being three points ahead at the start of play, with far superior goal difference and also having played a game fewer than their north London opponents.

Both teams go into the match having had their recent unbeaten runs halted last weekend, both falling to surprise defeats to teams lower down the table.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side had won their last five matches before their trip to Villa Park last Saturday, but fell 3-0 to an in form Villa side who have found themselves well in the hunt for European places, and head into this weekend only three points behind Tottenham.

The Magpies have been in and around the top four for almost the entire season, exceeding many people’s expectations for the season having finished 11th last season.

Tottenham had gone five matches unbeaten, winning three of their previous four before last week’s visit of relegation candidates Bournemouth, who came from behind to spring a shock win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With Newcastle having been beaten in the early kick-off, Christian Stellini’s men knew they had the chance to go level on points with the Magpies by the time their game kicked off, but failed to capitalise on Newcastle’s loss.

Many had expected Tottenham to build on last season’s top four finish at the end of last season, some even backing them to break into the top two or three after a seemingly successful summer transfer window.

The season hasn’t gone to plan for the club though, with Antonio Conte having left, and now face a real risk of finishing outside the top four having also exited all cup competitions relatively early on.

The top four is all Spurs have left to fight for now, anything less and the season will have to be considered a failure, while Newcastle will likely be happy with their progress this season regardless of securing an unlikely top four finish.

Newcastle won the previous fixture against Tottenham back in October, their first win against the side in six attempts, but Spurs have won on four of their last five visits to St James’ Park.
