Newcastle to break Liverpool curse

The Magpies have lost their previous 13 games against the Reds but these sides look like they are going in opposite directions currently.

Liverpool still have plenty of work to do in the transfer market with less than a week to go and have appeared far from convincing in their opening two games – a 1-1 draw with Chelsea and last week’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth.

Eddie Howe’s side have fewer points but thrashed a strong Aston Villa 5-1 in their opening game at home Park before losing just 1-0 to champions Manchester City last week.

St James’ Park has become a real fortress under Eddie Howe and his side’s midfield three of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton look stronger than any combination Liverpool can name.

We expect that to be enough for Newcastle to make it back-to-back home victories and lay down another significant marker in their progress.

Tonali can excite Toon Army

With the likes of Declan Rice, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo all going for more than £100m this year, Sandro Tonali’s £55m move from AC Milan to Newcastle could prove to be a bargain.

The Italian’s career on Tyneside got off to the perfect start when he scored six minutes into his debut in the 5-1 win over Villa, showing his willingness to go forward.

With Liverpool’s lack of a top-quality defensive midfielder, he is likely to have the same licence to attack against the Reds.

Tonali had two efforts on target in that match against Villa and at 6/4 is a good price to have at least one against Liverpool.

Newcastle vs Liverpool tip 2: Sandro Tonali 1+ shots on target @ 6/4 with Sky Bet

Isak to inspire

While Newcastle have been able to spread their goals out in recent months, Alexander Isak is still one of their most potent attacking threats, along with Callum Wilson off the bench.

The Sweden international made his entry into English football with a goal at Anfield on his Newcastle debut last season and ended the campaign with 10 strikes in 22 top-flight matches.

This term, he already has two – both in the win against Villa – and would look to be a serious contender for the Golden Boot if it were not for Erling Haaland at Manchester City.

The final selection for our bet builder is for Cody Gakpo to commit at least one foul in the match.

With Liverpool’s lacklustre midfield, the forward has been pushed back into the centre of the pitch.

While the Dutchman has not been totally embarrassed in the position, he has committed four fouls in the opening two games.

He will be up against both Tonali, Joelinton and Guimaraes who have drawn four fouls each this term, pointing to another foul by Gakpo.
