Next Liverpool manager odds: Jurgen Klopp to leave Reds at end of the season

Jurgen Klopp stunned the football world on Friday when he announced that he will leave his role as Liverpool manager at the end of the season, prompting bookmakers to swiftly install former Reds favourite Xabi Alonso as a short-priced favourite to replace the German.

Klopp has won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup since taking over at Anfield in October 2015 but will step down after the current campaign, saying he is “running out of energy”.

The 56-year-old led the Reds to next month’s League Cup final in midweek and his side are five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool continue their trophy quest with an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Norwich tomorrow and they are 40-1 with bet365 to land the quadruple in Klopp’s final season at the helm, having also made it through to the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Klopp is 7-1 to sign off with three trophies and 15-8 to take home two pieces of silverware. It’s evens that the German ends his Anfield tenure with a single trophy and 4-1 that Liverpool end up empty-handed this season.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who is currently managing Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, was made the early 5-4 favourite to replace Klopp at the helm and he quickly went odds-on after sustained support throughout Friday.

Alonso made 210 appearances for the Reds between 2004 and 2009, winning the Champions League, FA Cup, Uefa Super Cup and Community Shield during his time on Merseyside.

The Spaniard is followed in the betting by Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, who has earned plaudits aplenty since arriving at the Amex midway through the 2022-23 campaign.

De Zerbi is a best-priced 17-2 shot with Betfair and Paddy Power and is followed in the betting by Liverpool’s current assistant manager, Pep Lijnders.

Lijnders is scheduled to leave the club alongside Klopp but he is 10-1 to succeed his mentor in the Anfield dugout.

Julian Nagelsmann, sacked by Bayern Munich last year and currently in charge of the German national team, is a 12-1 chance while Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who is currently managing Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League, ranges from 11-1 to a best-priced 25-1 with Coral and Ladbrokes.
