Norris Trophy 2023 NHL Odds, Picks, Predictions: Can Anyone Dethrone Makar?

The winner of the Norris Trophy usually has been a player who has previously been in the running for the award. The award is decided by votes from hockey writers. The highest-scoring defensemen usually win the trophy. This year's Norris race is very competitive.

Cale Makar won the Norris Trophy and Conn Smythe Award as Playoff MVP for the Colorado Avalanche last season. Maker is a massive favorite to win the award in 2022-2023. He has missed more than a dozen games in two of his last three NHL seasons. Josi finished second in Norris voting last year, but he's the most likely to outscore Makarin.

Victor Hedman is a perennial Norris Trophy contender. Hedmen have finished in the top three in each of the past six seasons. He scored 85 points for Tampa Bay last season.

Adam Fox won the Norris Trophy in his second season in the NHL. Fox finished fifth in last year's voting. He had 74 points in 78 games for the New York Rangers in 2021-2022.

Miro Heiskanen finished with a career-high 36 points in 70 games last season. John Klingberg is leaving Dallas and Heikanenshould have a clear path to first unit power-play time. He scored 26 points during Dallas' run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019-2020.

MacKenzie Weegar was traded to Calgary as part of the Matthew Tkachuk deal in the summer. He scored 44 points last season and finished 14th in Norris Trophyvoting.

Rasmus Dahlin was the first overall pick in the 2018 NHL draft. He produced 53 points last season and played more than 24 minutes per game. The Buffalo Sabres should continue to improve this season. Dahli could be considered for the Norris Trophy.

Dougie Hamilton finished fourth in Norris Trophy voting in 2020-2021. He was not as effective last season with the New Jersey Devils as he was in previous stops with Carolina and Calgary.
