The Beavers rank 18th in the preseason AP Top 25 poll, following last season’s No. 16 preseason ranking. This marks the first time since 2012-2013 that Oregon State has received a preseason ranking in back-to-back years.

The Beaver’s defense was consistent in 2022, allowing 21 points per game. The most impressive showing came against USC, as the Beavers held eventual Heisman winner Caleb Williams and Co. to 17 points — the Trojans’ lowest offensive output of the season.

Offensively, OSU was extremely reliant on the rushing attack, thanks to a talented group of blockers. The Beavers averaged 196 yards per game on the ground, and leading ball carriers Damien Martinez and Deshaun Fenwick return in 2023.

The aerial attack was lackluster with Ben Gulbranson and Chance Nolan under center, as Oregon State averaged just under 200 passing yards per game. But the acquisition of D.J. Uiagalelei (Clemson) via the transfer portal brings hope for a more balanced attack.

Below are the three best Oregon State betting picks to place before the 2023 season kicks off.

There are obvious team tiers when viewing the 2023 Pac-12 Championship odds board. The market leaders are USC, Oregon, Washington, and Utah, followed by an odds drop-off to Oregon State and UCLA.

Beyond the Beavers and Bruins is an even larger decline to the true long shots to win the conference. While the Beavers aren’t resting in the top tier, the squad still has an excellent shot at claiming Pac-12 supremacy.

Oregon State’s in-conference schedule features tough matchups against Utah, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon. Besides the matchup vs. the Ducks, each game takes place at Reser Stadium.

The atmosphere in Corvallis poses as tough a test as any Pac-12 school. With home-field advantage being so crucial in college football, Oregon State has a realistic path to qualify for the conference title game.

The oddsmakers predict that matchup will come vs. USC, who the Beavers narrowly lost against last season. The Trojans’ 17-14 victory was thanks to OSU’s inability to create offense, as Nolan tossed four interceptions.

With Uiagalelei providing an upgrade at QB for the Beavers, the Trojans would have no easy win coming in the Pac-12 Championship game.

Not only does Oregon State play a majority of its difficult Pac-12 games at Reser Stadium, but the Beavers also face a favorable non-conference schedule. The season opens against San Jose State, UC Davis, and Fresno State.

While the Mountain West schools aren’t pushovers, Oregon State should notch victories against each team. In 2022, UC Davis’ lone power five opponent was Cal, which beat the Aggies 34-13.

Even with a subpar passing attack in 2022, Oregon State managed 10 wins. It’s unlikely Uiagalelei blossoms into a Heisman finalist, but he still serves as a massive upgrade under center.

The Beavers will continue implementing a run-first offense that will lead to nine or more wins in 2023.

In the Beavers 2022 season opener vs. Boise State, OSU won 34-17, with the game total landing at 54 points.

The 2022 Spartans ranked fourth in Mountain West scoring, averaging 27 points per game. The Beavers were middle of the pack in the Pac-12, averaging 32 points per game.

There’s no question the Beavers will put points on the board, leaving the Spartans to do their part to surpass the point total. San Jose State benefits from facing USC in Week 0, which should help fix any possible offense kinks ahead of the Oregon State matchup.

With an improved passing attack and the same top-notch RBs returning to Oregon State, expect offensive fireworks in Week 1.
