Below is an Oregon State vs. San Jose State matchup preview, plus betting odds for the No. 18 Beavers.

The Spartans are coming off a 7-5 season, and San Jose State’s lone game vs. a power-five opponent resulted in a 24-16 loss at Auburn.

SJSU is already 0-1 on the year following a 56-28 Week 0 setback against the USC Trojans. The Spartans defense was no match for Caleb Williams and USC, as the Trojans recorded 501 yards of total offense.

Despite the loss, San Jose State’s offense performed well. QB Chevan Cordeiro threw for 198 yards and three touchdowns, and RB Quali Conley led all ball carriers with 108 yards. WR Nick Nash was Cordeiro’s go-to guy, catching all three of the QB’s touchdown passes.

However, SJSU shouldn’t expect that same offensive success in Week 1. USC’s defense is middle of the pack in the Pac-12, while Oregon State’s is top-tier.

The Beavers allowed just 21 points and 342 yards per game in 2022. Pair that with an improved offense thanks to the arrival of D.J. Uiagalelei, and Oregon State should cover the 16.5-point spread with ease.

The Beavers faced three group-of-five opponents in 2022, and each matchup was a high-scoring affair:

  • vs. Boise State: 34-17
  • at Fresno State: 35-32
  • vs. Montana State: 68-28

The average total in Oregon State’s matchup with G5 teams was 71 points, and over 55 points were scored in two of three games.

The Beavers return much of the offense firepower that led to a 10-3 season. Oregon State’s top two rushers, Damien Martinez and Deshaun Fenwick, are back in 2023, along with two of the top four pass catchers.

SJSU also maintains continuity on offense, led by a pair of returning starters in Cordeiro and RB1 Kairee Robinson.

Expect a barn burner at CEFCU Stadium.
