Ottawa Senators vs. Nashville Predators Prediction, Preview, and Odds

The Nashville Predators will host the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. EST in Bridgestone Arena as a potential playoff spot is opening up for Nashville. They are currently 4th in the Central with 66 points in 59 games, but they are riding a five game winning streak heading into this contest. Meanwhile, the Senators are 7th in the Atlantic division with 53 points in 56 games, but they are 6-3-1 in their last ten. Nashville is the favorite at a -140 money line while the total is set at 6.5 goals.

Senators Still Alive?

Ottawa lost to the Washington Capitals in their latest outing by a score of 6-3. Shane Pinto and Brady Tkachuk each had three points with each scoring a goal and providing two assists. Nobody else had more than one point for the Senators while Jakob Chychrun tied with Tkachuk with three shots on goal. Anton Forsberg made only six of ten saves while Joonas Korpisalo made eight of ten saves in the effort.

Ottawa's offense is at least in the upper half in scoring, ranking 8th with 3.38 goals per game and 8th in shots with 32.6 per game on average. They are also 14th in the face-off circle with a 50.6% win rate. However, they are 24th on the power play with an 15.8% success rate. Giroux leads the squad with 47 points, but Tim Stutzle has the most assists with 36 and Brady Tkachuk has a team-high 25 goals for the Senators despite leading the team with 102 penalty minutes as well. Ridley Greig has a team-best +18 and Tkachuk has the most goals on the power play with seven. Giroux has gotten ten of his assists from the power play and Tkachuk has the most shots for Ottawa with 218. Stutzle leads all offensive skaters with 21:10 of average ice time.

Defensively is where the Senators are lacking, as they have surrendered an average of 3.62 goals per game, ranking 30th in the NHL. They crack the top-20 in shots against with 30.5 per contest, but their kryptonite is on the penalty kill. They are ranked second to last with a 74.1% kill rate. Jakob Chychrun leads the blue-liners in points (29), assists (21), goals (8), shots (118), and power play assists (8). Thomas Chabot takes the cake in average time spent on the ice with 24:18 while Chychrun has three goals on the power play. Travis Harmonic is 3rd on the team overall in penalty minutes with 40 and Artem Zub leads the defenders with a +8. Joonas Korpisalo has gotten the majority of starts in net for the Senators, but he has not done a good job. He currently has a 3.42 GAA and an 88.7% save percentage. His backup, Anton Forsbreg, has a 3.32 GAA and an 89.2% save percentage. Zub is the only player listed on the injury report for Ottawa, and he is questionable with a lower body injury.

Nashville Not Dead Yet

The Predators took home a 4-2 victory against the Anaheim Ducks in their most recent contest. Dante Fabbro had two assists and Filip Forsberg had a goal and an assist as the leading players for Nashville. Forsberg had a team-high five shots on goal while Kevin Lankinen stopped 29 of 31 shots for the Predators.

Nashville is currently ranked 18th in goals per game among all teams in the NHL with an average of 2.96. Their power play has a success rate of 20.6% and their face off win percentage is 48.9%, ranking 18th and 23rd in the league. They are also 15th in the league in producing shots with an average of 30.9 per game. Forsberg leads the forwards in goals (24), assists (27), points (51), power play assists (13), and shots (203). Ryan O'Reilly has the most power play goals with 11 and is the only offensive skater to spend an average of more than 19:30 minutes on the ice per game. Forsberg also has a +6 while Michael McCarron has 61 penalty minutes this season, most among forwards.

The Predators rank 19th in the league in goals against per game with 3.14, but they are just inside the top-15 defense in terms of shots against per game with 30.0. Unfortunately, they are one of the worst teams in the penalty kill, stopping only 76.5% of their oppositions power plays. Saros has started out the season slow but has gotten better as the season has gone on. He currently owns a save percentage at 90.3% and a GAA of 2.94. Roman Josi has the most points among defenders with 45. He has the most goals and assists among defenders while Spencer Stastney has a +6 on the year and Jeremy Lauzon has a team-high 66 penalty minutes. Josi spends an average of 24:49 on the ice while also leading blue-liners in shots with 165. Josi is the only defender a power play goal and 10+ power play assists. Fortunately for the Predators, nobody is listed on the injury report for this matchup.

Rating:

This is an eyebrow-raising matchup at the very least, as Nashville is looking to sneak into the playoffs while the Senators are doing better than they have earlier in the season. Interestingly, Nashville has been worse at home this season with a sub .500 record including three of their last four and Ottawa has been terrible on the road with an 8-15-1 record, including losing their last three of four away from home. However, Nashville has won four of their last five games at home against the Senators. The Predators have the momentum and the drive to win this game just a bit more and while Ottawa has been solid against the spread this season, their record overall isn't that great. In the span of ten days, the Senators have beaten the Dallas Stars and Vegas Golden Knights while also losing to the Blackhawks and Ducks. I don't know what to make of that team so I'm going with the safer play with Nashville on the money line.

Prediction: Nashville Predators Money Line (-140)

Rating:

Nashville's offense has been clicking on all cylinders as of late, scoring 4+ goals in their last five games in a row. Nashville has scored at least three goals against the Senators in seven of their last eight meetings and they have gone 5-3-2 on the over in their last ten. I'm less concerned about Ottawa doing what they can to hit the over, as they have the better offense. The Senators have hit the over in the majority of their games this year and they are still one of the top scoring offenses in the league right now. Considering how Nashville's offense is performing, Ottawa may need to score only 2-3 goals for the over to hit in this case. Both teams will be at relatively full strength in this contest, meaning they will be playing at their best. Ottawa has relied on their offense all year and the Predators have utilized their offense to continue their winning streak. Expect more of the same.
