Padres vs. Cardinals Wednesday MLB probable pitchers, odds: San Diego would tie unwelcome record with another extra-inning loss

You can bet on whether any MLB game goes to extra innings, and that Wednesday's matinee series finale from St. Louis between the Padres and Cardinals, two of the National League's biggest disappointments, does go to extras is +750 at DraftKings (No is -1600). If that happens and the Padres lose, they would tie an unwanted MLB record.

San Diego blew a 5-3 eighth-inning lead Tuesday night and lost 6-5 in 10 innings as star closer Josh Hader took the loss at Busch Stadium. It was his second straight day with an appearance on the mound, meaning he probably won't be available Wednesday if need be.

That dropped the Padres to 0-11 this season in extra-inning games. The MLB record for worst record in extra-inning games in a season is 0-12 by the expansion 1969 Montreal Expos, who finished that year a brutal 52-110 overall. If each extra-inning game was a toss-up, the likelihood of any team losing 11 straight is 1 in 2,048.

"We haven't been able to push through in those types of games unfortunately," said Padres manager Bob Melvin after Tuesday's loss.

The Padres also are the first team to lose 11 successive extra inning contests since Tampa Bay dropped 11 in a row in 2015. San Diego is hitting .160 in extra innings with only two extra-base hits. The lone homer was by Manny Machado in a game the Padres already trailed by four runs.

Seattle leads the majors in extra-inning losses this year with 12 but has won six. Minnesota leads the majors with 11 extras wins in 17 tries. St. Louis is 5-5 in bonus baseball.

This was to be Yu Darvish's start for the Padres, but the right-hander landed on the IL earlier this week with elbow inflammation and his season might be over. So it's lefty Rich Hill (7-13, 5.21 ERA), the oldest player in the majors at 43. He went 0-3 with 9.53 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over his first three starts with the Padres following his acquisition from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline and was yanked from the rotation. Hill pitched 2.2 innings of relief last Friday in Milwaukee and allowed two runs.

Paul Goldschmidt will be a popular Over 1.5 total bases (-115 at DK) and/or a home run (+370) prop pick Wednesday, as he's 12-for-26 off Hill with three homers.

The Cardinals counter with Miles Mikolas (6-10, 4.66 ERA). The 35-year-old started his career with the Padres back in 2012. Mikolas is on a personal career-high five-game skid but is 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA in five career starts vs. San Diego. He hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 12.2 innings pitched against the Padres and has never allowed more than three runs in any of his previous five starts.

Over their last 15 games, the Cardinals have scored six runs or more in all five victories, but just three runs or fewer in all 10 defeats.
