Plans announced for horse racing gaming facility near Park City

Boyd Gaming Corporation has announced that it has filed an application with the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission for a new historical horse-racing and gaming facility in Sedgwick County.   It will be called Diamond Jo Park City.

The company is proposing to develop a new $160 million facility at Interstate 135 and 77th Street North.   It would have a casino floor along with amenities like a steakhouse, a sports bar and grill, a bar and lounge, and space for meetings and conventions.   The facility would also have the first Amazon Go store in Kansas, which would be a grocery store with advanced technology.   The facility would have up to 1,000 historical horse racing terminals that would allow players to bet on replays of historical horse race events.

Boyd Gaming officials plan to use 100 percent private financing and the facility would create nearly 600 direct and indirect jobs in the community, with about $30 million a year in wages, salaries and benefits.   The facility is estimated to generate about $90 million a year in additional economic activity in south central Kansas.

Boyd Gaming operates the Kansas Star Casino near Mulvane in Sumner County.   It also operates several other casinos under the Diamond Jo name.   The company said it is filing the application as a result of language in the sports betting bill that was passed by the Kansas Legislature last year.
