The Preakness Stakes is the second-most attended Grade 1 Thoroughbred race in America. The original race took place in 1873. A horse named Preaks won the First Dinner Party Stake at Pimlico upon the track's opening.

Horses automatically qualify for the Preakness Stakes if they win the Kentucky Derby, Oaklawn Invitational, El Camino Real Derby and Federico Tesio Stake. Past earnings are also considered for eligibility. The race is strictly for three-year-old thoroughbreds.
Rombauer won the 2021 edition of the Preakness Stakes. Midnight Bourbon finished second.

Jockey Mike E Smith rode a horse worth almost $2 million to victory in the Louisiana Derby in March. The horse won the race by 7 lengths. The winner of the Preaks Stake is decided on a distance. Last year's winner Rambaeur was not racing in 2021 Kentucky derby. Three of top-five finishers from the last Preakers Stakers were runners in that year’s KentuckyDerby. A filly has only won this race on six occasions during its history.
