Previewing The Official Start of the 2023 Big Ten Wrestling Season

The Big Ten wrestling season is exciting. The All-Star Classic, Colliegate Duals, Southern Scuffle and more are on the schedule.

Maryland went from 9-37 over the last three seasons to 5-0 this season. Ohio State lost to UNI and dropped from #3 to #9 in the non-con schedule. They will wrestle #4 Michigan and #7 Northwestern this semester.

Northwestern and Maryland have been impressive in non-conference. Ohio State is a good bet in conference season. Northwestern will lose to Iowa and OSU, but they could win the rest of their duals. They could send 9 people to the NCAAs, including 4 All-Americans.

The Big Ten is very crowded at the weights 141, 149, 157, 165, 197, and 285. Real Woods (Iowa), Austin Gomez (Wisconsin), Peyton Robb (Nebraska), Carson Kharchla (Ohio State), Jacob Warner (Iow), and Greg Kerkvleit (Penn State) are the obvious winners.

HWAHSQB likes Real Woods, Sammy Sasso, Kendall Coleman, Peyton Robb, Hamiti and Cassioppi. Jaxon Smith is the best shot Maryland has of ever winning anything.

Woods, Gomez, Robb, Hamiti, Warner, Cassioppi, Jaxon Smith, Kerkvliet and Cam Amine are the wrestlers who will start the 2023 Big Ten Wrestling Season.

Illinois and Iowa are going to meet on Friday, January 6th at 7 pm on BTN+. Illinois is favored at 133 and 174, but Iowa will be heavy favorites in the other matches. Atinat, HWAHSQB and Atinshah are predicting Iowa to win 33-6. They are looking forward to the start of the Big Ten Wrestling Season. The team is going for a cautious approach to ensure a healthy team going into March.

The official start of the Big Ten Wrestling Season is this weekend. Gophers are clear favorites at 165 and 174, and a slight favorite at 184. Northwestern is a slightly favorite in 197 and bigger favorite for 275.

Iowa is favored at nearly every weight except 157. Spencer will get his toughest test of the year in Matt Ramos and Real Woods. Kendall Coleman is the remaining ranked wrestler for the Boilermakers. Iowa is expected to win 34-3.

#13 Wisconsin and #28 Illinois are meeting on January 8th at 3 pm on the Big Ten Network. Illinois is a solid favorite at 133, 174, and 184. If Austin Gomez is still out of action, Illinois might win by 22-13.

Zach Braunagel beat Braxton Amos at Midlands. Neither Zargo nor Model are locks. Byrd will get MD over Lamont and Pucino will win at 141. Illini have better bonus point opportunities at 125, 149, and 165.

Indiana and Maryland are wrestling each other on Monday, January 9th at 6:30 PM on BTN+. Indiana is the worst team in the conference. The Hoosiers have six ranked wrestlers, but only four of them are in top-30 range. Atinat thinks Maryland will win the match 19-14.

#4 Michigan is playing Cal Poly on Friday, January 6th at 9PM and CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Jan 8th, at 2PM. Michigan has more ranked wrestlers than their two opponents combined. CalPoly has four ranked guys, including Oklahoma-transfer Dom Demas, Adam Kemp, and Bernie Truax. Bakerfield has ranked wrestler at 133 and 141 pounds.

Nebraska is wrestling against Gardner-Webb and Campbell. They are playing on Saturday, January 7th at 4:30 PM and 6 PM. Nebraska has four ranked wrestlers. Gardner Webb has Rodrick Mosley, Bubba Wilson, Domenic Zaccone and Caleb Hopkins. Campbell has Taye Ghadiali, who is ranked #12.

Rutgers and Bloomsburg are going to play a dual on January 6th and 8th. The winner will start the Big Ten Wrestling Season. Rutgers has five ranked wrestlers, Blosburg has zero and Rider has three. Ethan Laird is ranked 10th at 197 pounds.
