Rampant gambling amid cricket fever

As Pakistan competed in the 2nd match during the ongoing Cricket World Cup, illegal gambling activities continued to thrive in Chakwal.

The city witnessed millions of rupees being staked on cricket teams. According to sources, various city business centres, including Moti Bazaar, Sarafa Bazaar, Chapar Bazaar, and Purani Sabzi Mandi, turned into gambling dens.

Despite lackluster police actions, the gambling business was reported to be flourishing, often with the support of influential individuals and a few corrupt elements within the police force, sources added. Gamblers were reportedly betting specific amounts on their favourite teams.

A special survey unveiled that some gambling venues were providing food, beverages, and entertainment facilities, broadcasting World Cup matches on large screens to attract gamblers. Notably, action had been taken against gamblers in Sarafa Bazaar just a few weeks ago, resulting in the arrest of a gambler named Zebi. Meanwhile, citizens have called for strict measures to eliminate the unlawful gambling business.

On the other hand, a collision involving a motorcycle and a trawler resulted in the loss of a young boy's life and left three others injured on Kallar Kahar Choa Saidan Shah Road.

The incident occurred as four friends were returning from Jhal Chakian Hotel after a meal, and they collided with a trawler due to the poor condition of the road. The injured individuals were promptly assisted by Rescue 1122 and transferred to a hospital.
