Saints vs. Rams: TV, series history, trends, uniforms, QBs

The New Orleans Saints play the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. It's the first time the Saints have played an NFC opponent since losing to the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 20. The teams played each other twice per season for more than three decades when they were in the NFC West. Since 2002, when New York moved into the NFL's NFC South, the two teams have met 12 times, including the infamous "no-call" game in January 2019.

Saints and Rams are playing each other at the Caesars Superdome at noon on Sunday. The game is being broadcast on FOX-8 in the New Orleans metro area.

The Saints are -2.5 with a money line of -140. Rams are +118 as of late Saturday night. The over/under total is 39.

The weather is expected to be good inside the Caesars Superdome. The Rams will wear a standard uniform. Saints will be wearing throwback 1967 home uniforms. Ron Torbert is the lead official. He has been in that role since 2014. Rams are 8-4 overall and 7-5 in the regular season. Torberts crew has called 47 penalties on the home team for 462 yards this season, compared to 44 penalties for 415 yards on visiting team.

Saints are looking to avoid a third three-game losing streak this season. They haven't had multiple three losing streaks this early in a season since Mike Ditka’s first campaign in 1997. This is the third game in New Orleans this year against a team from the NFC and second against the West. The Saints defeated Seattle, 39-32, on Oct. 9. The Rams are looking to avoid their worst start after 10 games since opening 2-8 in Steve Spagnuolo’s third and final season of 2011. Los Angeles is ranked 32nd in the NFL in overall offense (yards gained) and 29th in points scored. They are 32st in rushing offense and 21st on passing. Rams also are sixth in NFL on defense (18th overall) with 18th points allowed.

The Rams lead the overall series 43-34. The Rams won the first game in Saints history 27-13 at Tulane Stadium on Sept. 17, 1967.

The Rams won the last meeting 27-9 on Sept. 15, 2019, in Los Angeles.

The Rams and Saints have alternated wins and losses since 2013. The most recent game was a 27-16 Rams win in St. Louis on Dec. 15, 2013, but there hasn't been a regular-season game decided by fewer than five points in the series since 2004. There have been memorable games in both the regular season and the postseason. The Rams won the NFC Championship on Jan. 20, 2019, in overtime. In the other postseason game, the Saints won their first-ever playoff game against Kurt Warner.

The Saints and Rams have played each other many times in the regular season and the playoffs. The most memorable game was the "no-call game" in which the Saints won 28-25 in overtime in St. Louis on Sept. 26, 2004. In the other postseason game, the Rams won their first-ever playoff game against Kurt Warner on Dec. 30, 2000. The game ended in a loss for the New Orleans Saints in 1983. They were trying to clinch their division title and a playoff berth.

The first game in the NFL for the New York Jets was on September 13, 2009. They lost 37-16. The team finished with a 3-5 record.
