Scottish Grand National tips and odds: Kitty's Light favourite at Ayr, Flower Of Scotland a 12/1 shot

The Scottish Grand National sets off at Ayr Racecourse on Saturday afternoon in a top-class two-day meeting.

31 runners are still declared out of a possible 30 in the main event in what’s set to be a very competitive renewal, with Kitty’s Light a clear favourite.

Kitty’s Light was a close second to last year’s winner Win My Wings on April 2, 2022.

Trainer Christian Williams had a 1-2 in the Scottish National who were 13/2 co-favourites with Stormy Judge, who was pulled up four out.

Many runners from these Nationals progress on and race in the Grand National at Aintree a year later with valuable experience.

But one that stands out is a horse who placed behind this year’s Grand National winner in the Ultima last time out.

Scottish Grand National tips

This seven-year-old trained by Jonjo O’Neill has rocketed in the weights since switching to fences.

On his chase debut at Aintree he was a disappointing fourth of four.

But since then has won three times and gone from a mark of 122 to a rating now of 145 since coming a close third to the Grand National winner Corach Rambler.

That was his first attempt over anything beyond 3m and he seemed to relish it.

4m always demands more but it doesn’t seem this gelding has reached his maximum potential just yet.

Kitty’s Light is probably too short a price to fancy at 4/1 but is undoubtedly a worthy favourite.

At only seven he’s won five times from 21 runs in numerous stamina tests, including a second in this race last year off 3lb higher.

He won the Eider at Newcastle last time out which was probably the ideal prep and has a great record at this distance.

There are a plethora of runners who don’t have much form if any over 3m and are a bit of a question mark at this distance.

Trainers won’t be sending them to Scotland unless they were sure of some stamina hopes and it will be interesting to see how the market guides on the outsiders in the lead up to the off.
