Shriners Children’s Open tips: Cam Davis ready to convert recent form into second Tour success

This par-71, 7,255-yard course has been part of the USPGA Tour since 1983, and previous tournaments here have been loaded with birdies and hot putters.

At 2,000 feet above sea level, distance is not as important as accuracy off the tea, although there are just four water hazards on the course and the bunkering is not severe.

The defending champion is Tom Kim, who is a 12/1 joint favourite here alongside the Swedish star Lucas Aberg.

Kim beat a stronger field in 2022 than he will face here, but Lucas Aberg played a big part in the Ryder Cup, then flew to Mississippi last week and was only beaten in a five-man play-off by Luke List on Sunday.

He now journeys to the heat of Las Vegas, and although he must surely run out of steam at some point it would be unwise to write him off.

Cam Davis is next best at 22/1 and this appears to be a great opportunity for him based on his recent uptick in form, which appears to have him knocking at the door of his second USPGA Tour success.

Since missing the cut at the Scottish Open in July, the Australian has made the top ten four times out of five (40th in the other) with a season-best third-placed finish at the Fortinet Championship last time out in September.

Si Woo Kim has been placed here in two of the previous three years, which suggests he can go well again this week. However, he can be somewhat hit-and-miss and is hard to figure before a tournament starts, so his 22/1 odds available may be a little shorter than he deserves.

JJ Spaun is Las Vegas resident who plays this course more than most here, and he finished a decent enough 11th at the Fortinet Championship, and so might be worth a punt at 28/1.

Then at 45/1 we have the always promising but often disappointing Christian Bezuidenhout, for whom this course should be a good fit, while further down the betting board at 80/1 is recent tour winner Ashkay Bhatia. In a somewhat weakened field we may have found some value here?

There are some longshots that catch the eye this week, with Martin Laird standing out as a previous winner here in 2020. Reading his comments on this course he does say that it suits his game and that he likes to play it, so is he worth a go at 90/1?

Also at a similar tasty price is Scott Stallings, who was another golfer to miss out in last weekend’s play-off beaten in the play off in Mississippi last week, he he certainly has the form to defy those juicy odds.

And finally, last and maybe or maybe not least, Webb Simpson has a good previous record at TPC Summerlin. He has not been playing that well in recent times, but the return to a course he likes may rekindle something worth investing in at 95/1.
