Southampton Relegation Odds Drift To 2/5 After 1-0 Loss To Leeds

Southampton have seen their chances of playing Championship football next season increase, with UK betting sites pricing them at 2/5 to be relegated.

The Saints currently sit bottom of the Premier League, three points behind Bournemouth who play Manchester City later tonight. Manager Ruben Selles was appointed until the end of the season and the Spaniard got off to a poor start, losing 1-0 to Leeds.

Selles’ side started the game brightly, with Kamaldeen Sulemana having the best chance as his shot failed to trouble the Leeds goalkeeper.  Chances were few and far between for the rest of the half, with Stuart Armstrong coming close for the Saints.

The second-half followed a different patter, as Leeds started to grow into the game in front of their home fans. Wilfried Gnonto came close for the hosts before the unlikely Junior Firpo put the Whites ahead with a well-taken strike.

Can Southampton avoid the drop?

The Saints have struggled to pick up points this season, as the recently sacked Nathan Jones only managed to win one league game. This lead to his dismissal after four months and since then the club have still struggled to find any real momentum.

Appointing Ruben Selles brought some hope for Southampton fans, however, the new manager bounce was not present today. The Spaniard’s next league fixture is vital if he wants to keep his side up, as the Saints welcome Leicester to St Mary’s next Saturday.
