Sweden can make experience count

Sweden’s World Cup campaign ended at the semi-final stage in France four years ago but they will be confident of going a step further when they face Spain in the last four on Tuesday.

They remain one of the most high-profile women’s teams never to have won this prize but they have plenty of major tournament experience behind them.

As well as finishing third in 2019, Sweden were semi-finalists at Euro 2022 in England last year, and will be hoping they can make that experience count against Spain, who are in uncharted territory.

Sweden won all three of their matches in Group G against South Africa, Italy and Argentina, scoring nine times and conceding only once. They then knocked out the holders – the USA – in the round of 16, and followed that with a 2-1 win over highly rated Japan.

Spain have been consistent but it is hard to overlook their 4-0 defeat by Japan in the group stage – a result that highlighted a lack of composure and tournament experience.

In contrast, Peter Gerhardsson’s side have hardly put a foot wrong at this Women’s World Cup and are a solid bet to see off Spain at 13/5.

High-scoring clash in the cards

Sweden have proved stubborn opponents at this Women’s World Cup but they could find it tough to keep out La Roja entirely in this semi-final contest.

Spain are the top scorers at the tournament with 15 goals and have recorded some convincing wins such as their 5-1 defeat of Switzerland in the last 16.

Even with Alexia Putellas playing a more limited role as she recovers from injury, Spain have excelled going forward, the likes of Jennifer Hermoso and Aitana Bonmati contributing goals from midfield.

Sweden’s experience and physicality should give them the edge, but all five of Spain’s games at this Women’s World Cup have featured over 2.5 goals and that looks like decent selection again.

Ilestedt’s fine form set to continue

When putting together a bet builder for this semi-final, backing Sweden to win and both teams to score is a good place to start.

It landed in Sweden’s previous match against Japan as well as their opener against South Africa and, as highlighted, Spain are a team with goals in them.

To complete the bet builder, add Sweden defender Amanda Ilestedt to score at any time in the match. Ilestedt has scored four times in five matches at this Women’s World Cup and her physicality in the box could cause problems for the Spanish.
