Miami Marlins

The Marlins took a 5-2 loss to the Orioles on Friday and a 6-5 loss in game two. On Sunday Miami showed some life in the ninth with four runs but ended up losing 5-4. Starting pitcher Steven Okert lasted just 0.1 innings with four hits and three earned.

In the starter slot Monday the Marlins are going with Jesus Luzardo. Over 19 starts this year Luzardo is 8-5 with a 3.29 ERA and 129 Ks in 109.1 innings. Luzardo is 21-23 with a 4.21 ERA in 80 career games (64 starts).

St. Louis Cardinals

Over on the St. Louis side, they lost to the Nationals 7-5 on Friday but came back for a 9-6 win in game two. In the rubber match Sunday (after a delay) the Cardinals took the series with an 8-4 victory. Starter Jack Flaherty finished with 6.0 innings, three earned, three hits and three walks.

As starting pitcher for St. Louis Monday it’ll be Miles Mikolas. So far in 20 starts Mikolas is 5-5 with a 4.12 ERA and 80 Ks in 115.2 innings. He’s 50-45 with a 3.76 career ERA in 163 games (135 starts).

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll probably stay with the Marlins here. Luzardo is on a good run right now. He’s 2-0 in his last three games with 18.2 combined innings, two earned, 12 hits and four walks. Miami should be in solid shape if Luzardo can come up with another quality outing. On Sunday the Marlins took a tough loss but really only had a couple of bad innings on the mound while holding the O’s to five hits. The offense couldn’t cash in on anything until the ninth though, so Miami will need to wake up the bats in this opener.
