Super Bowl 2024: Sam Darnold winning MVP would be 1 sportsbook’s worst nightmare

The Super Bowl is the most-bet sporting event of the year, and with sports betting now legal in 38 U.S. states, there is more money bet nationwide than ever. With all of that money comes some interesting wagers.

Thomas Gable, sportsbook director at The Borgata in New Jersey, told For The Win this weekend that his current biggest liability to win Super Bowl LVIII MVP was Sam Darnold at 300-1 odds. Yes, that’s San Francisco 49ers backup QB Sam Darnold.

As Gable pointed out, a few bets at 300-1 odds can really make the liability rise quickly. Plus, at this point in the week there isn’t nearly the same money overall that will be bet as we get closer to the weekend.

Still, it’s a wager based on Brock Purdy getting injured (or playing poorly enough to be benched), followed by Darnold leading the 49ers over Patrick Mahomes to a Super Bowl victory.

Could it happen? I suppose it’s worth a 300-1 ticket.
