Texas Aggies Football: Conner Weigman Heisman betting odds unveiled

A winning season, a College Football Playoff appearance, and a national title are just a handful of goals for Texas A&M this coming season. Should we include Heisman Winner in there as well?

As it pertains to this year’s award race, Aggies quarterback Conner Weigman has +10000 odds to hoist the hardware per DraftKings Sportsbook, which is tied with seven other players for the 36th-best odds in the country.

Tyler Van Dyke (Miami), Tanner Mordecai (SMU), Jalon Daniels (Kansas), Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), Will Howard (Kansas State), MarShawn Lloyd (USC), and Brock Bowers (Georgia) also have +10000 odds for the Heisman.

When looking solely at the SEC, 12 other individuals have better odds for the hardware. Tennessee QB Joe Milton III (+2000), LSU QB Jayden Daniels (+2000), Georgia QBs Carson Beck (+2000) and Brock Vandagriff (+2000), Ole Miss RB Quinshon Judkins (+5000), and Alabama QBs Ty Simpson (+6000) Tyler Buchner (+6000) and Jalen Milroe (+6000) headline the group.

Rounding out the rest are South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler (+6000), Arkansas QB KJ Jefferson (+8000), Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart (+8000), and Kentucky QB Devin Leary (+8000).

Weigman was thrust into the starting lineup last season following a season-ending injury to LSU transfer Max Johnson, who was elevated as the starting signal-caller in the aftermath of third-year Haynes King’s early-season struggles. Weigman more than rose to the occasion, throwing for 896 yards in five starts with eight passing touchdowns and zero interceptions.

His best performance of the season came in Week 9 against Ole Miss, going 28-44 for 338 yards and four touchdowns with an average of 7.7 yards per attempt. Weigman’s performance constituted his best offensive grade (78.6) and highest passing grade (76.3) of the season, per Pro Football Focus.

The potential for Weigman is sky-high coming off a promising first year, and the bright (albeit limited) sample size is likely the factor regarding his current long-shot odds to win the Heisman. But the second-year signal-caller is getting a huge boost from new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, who for all his quirks and traits, has been a proven commodity especially as it pertains to developing quarterbacks.

Petrino’s ingenuity in maximizing his QB’s skillset was on full display as he coached Lamar Jackson at Louisville. Jackson was awarded the Heisman trophy in 2016 after finishing with 3,543 passing yards, 30 passing touchdowns, and nine interceptions to go along with 260 carries for 1,571 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns.

Could he boast another potential Heisman winner as Petrino works with the (likely) Aggies starting quarterback in Weigman?

Those aspirations are best saved closer to the fall season, as Texas A&M, including Weigman, are dedicating their full attention to putting together a resounding 2023 comeback campaign. But if they achieve that goal with their second-year QB under center led by Petrino’s playcalling, then it’s not far-fetched to wonder if some hardware is headed to College Station.
