Texas A&M Aggies Announce Maroon And White Game Date

Texas A&M football will look for better results in 2023, but fans of the Aggies will get an up-close look at the program well before its Sept. 2 kickoff against New Mexico. 

Texas A&M announced its annual Maroon and White game would take place on Apr. 15 at Kyle Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will feature a new cast of prospects looking to make their mark early for a program needing direction. 

Things soured fast in 2022 under fifth-year coach Jimbo Fisher. After picking up a 31-0 win over FCS Sam Houston, the Aggies would fall in Week 2 in a 17-14 upset against Appalachian State. 

The same formula occurred at the start of conference play. Despite winning the Southwest Classic over then-No. 10 Arkansas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the Aggies would go on to lose six games against SEC opponents, including close matchups to South Carolina, Ole Miss and Auburn,

The Aggies managed to salvage their season thanks to a 38-23 upset win in the season finale over then-No. 5 LSU. Still, Texas A&M finished 5-7, becoming bowl ineligible for the first time since 2008. 

The expectation in College Station remains the same. Fisher, who now is 39–21 with the Aggies, was brought over from Florida State to lead the school toward national championship aspirations. And with a much more durable and experienced unit, oddsmakers are high on Texas A&M rebounding offensively under new coordinator Bobby Petrino. 

All eyes will be on the quarterback position as Conner Weigman looks to build off a promising first year. Weigman, a top-ranked quarterback recruit from Bridgeland High School (Cypress, TX), started the final five games for the Aggies and posted a 2-3 record. He threw for 896 yards and eight touchdowns with zero turnovers in the process. 

Defensively, the Aggies should remain a staple in the SEC thanks to the return of several key players. Linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, defensive lineman McKinnley Jackson and defensive back Demani Richardson all announced that they would be headed back to College Station for one final year. 

Texas A&M also worked the transfer portal in its favor to replace the production of cornerback Jaylon Jones and nickel defender Antonio Johnson. The Aggies added former All-ACC cornerback Tony Grimes (North Carolina) and versatile defensive back Sam McCall (Florida State). 

The Aggies are currently in the winter conditioning phase of the offseason and cannot begin practice until later this spring. According to the NCAA ruling, all schools are allotted 15 practices before the spring game in mid-to-late March.
