Event Preview

The Players Championship is an event that requires very little setting up, as the world’s best players will be in action across the prestigious course in Florida. A huge purse of $25 million will be available to players involved in the event, with the course record score set by Greg Norman in 1994.

Cameron Smith will not be back to defend his crown, as the Australian defected to the LIV Tour toward the end of last year. However, a number of previous champions are among the leading contenders in the betting. Rory McIlroy won The Players Championship by a shot in 2019, and he will be looking for a response after falling short in the Arnold Palmer Invitational last weekend.

Justin Thomas is another previous winner that is among the favorites this weekend. Thomas won the event back in 2021, as he finished a shot clear of lee Westwood. After a disappointing final round last weekend, the American finished outside the top 20 in the Arnold Palmer.

Jon Rahm has been the best golfer on the planet over the early months of the season, and there would be few surprises if he continues that hot streak with success in Florida. He finished strongly last weekend to end at just +1.

The Players Championship Predictions

While cases can be made for many of the top players this weekend, I’d be prepared to take a chance on Xander Schauffele. The American finished second in the event in 2018, and despite a poor finish last weekend, he still finished in a tie for 39. At a bigger price, a case could be made for Sepp Straka. The Austrian has finished in the top ten on three occasions this weekend, and I believe he is slightly over-priced at the current odds.
