Tigers vs. Cubs: odds, picks and predictions 8/23/2023

Detroit’s slugging won the day on Tuesday, clipping the Cubs 8-6 behind two home runs by Andy Ibañez. On Tuesday these two Midwest teams meet in the finale of their series in Detroit.

Tarik Skubal (3-2, 3.76 ERA, 43 K in 38.1 IP) vs. Jameson Taillon (7-8, 5.56 ERA, 94 K in 110 IP)

Skubal’s performance after coming back from injury is some of the best news the Tigers have gotten this season. The tall lefty is developing into a sturdy, reliable starter, giving the team two tough pitchers to helm the rotation, along with Eduardo Rodriguez.

In one other start against the Cubs, Skubal allowed four runs in six innings and received the loss.

Another tempting bet for Wednesday is the under on strikeouts for Taillon, who appears to be tiring as the season navigates through the hot days of summer. Taillon has just 21 K’s in his last 32 innings. That means the Under on 5 K’s would be a decent option.

  • The Cubs are 64-61 against the spread.
  • Three of the last four Cubs games have gone OVER.
  • Nine of Detroit’s last 12 games have gone UNDER total runs, but the last two have been OVER.
  • In each of Tarik Skubal’s last three starts, the total has gone UNDER.

Detroit Wins by 1-3 Runs (+155)

On Tuesday, our bet of the day (Spencer Torkelson to walk in his first PA) paid off at +650, or $650 in winnings on a $100 bet. Today, we like Detroit to capture Game 3 of this series against the Cubs, by a margin of 1 to 3 runs. Since August 8, the Tigers are 9-5, the second-best record in the American League. This team is playing spirited baseball, and unlike recent seasons, the Tigers in 2023 are not just playing the string out in a lackluster fashion.

The Cubs have played well since management elected to not trade off their best players at the deadline and, instead, go for a playoff run. However, the Tigers are one of the hottest teams in MLB in the last two weeks. They’ve beaten the Twins in two series, and taken three of four from Cleveland. The offense is waking up, and the long ball is fueling the run production. We like the Tigers to win, leading the whole way. Odds for this three-game parlay at FanDuel are +438. If you bet $25 and win, you’ll collect $109.74 for your wager.

  • Detroit Tigers: To win the first 5 innings
  • Detroit Tigers: -1.5 runline
  • Spencer Torkelson: To record an RBI
