Sawyer Gipson-Long (MLB debut) vs. Jesse Scholtens (1-7, 4.38 ERA, 3.9 K per 6 IP)

Every professional ballplayer dreams of their Major League debut. That milestone is here today for Gipson-Long, who was summoned from the Toledo Mud Hens to step into a bruised and barren Tiger rotation. One man’s broken bone is another man’s salvation: last week, Matt Manning suffered a broken foot when a line drive was hit back the mound. As a result, Gipson-Long will make his first start in The Show.

Detroit acquired SGL last year at the trade deadline for Michael Fulmer. The right-hander has revamped his repertoire and pitch selection based on feedback from Detroit’s pitching department, and now he’s showing off a blend of off-speed pitches low in the zone. But it’s his high fastball that Gipson-Long is using to get punch-outs. Still, in his big league debut, it’s likely the young pitcher will need to rely on his defense in full force.

In three of his last four starts, Jesse Scholtens has allowed five runs. It’s possible he’s slowing after a grueling 12 months spent in winter ball in the Dominican, followed by Triple-A and finally his MLB debut at the advanced age of 29 in April. He was a feel-good story back then, but the shine has faded from Scholtens as the White Sox have tumbled in the AL Central.

Scholtens has allowed 2 ER in 4 ⅔ innings against Detroit, with 3 SO and 2 BB.

  • The total has been UNDER in 6 of the last 7 games between DET/CHISOX
  • The total has been OVER in 5 of the CHISOX last 6 games on the road vs. Detroit
  • The Tigers have at least 1 home run in 7 of its last 10 games overall
  • Detroit holds a 7-5 edge in the season series with the White Sox
  • The Tigers have outscored the Sox 46-44 this season head-to-head

The Tigers are a better team than Chicago, even with an untested starting pitcher on the hill. We don’t mind giving 1.5 runs to get +154 odds on Detroit in the Motor City against the Pale Hose. On Saturday the same odds hit on the run line (spread). A winning bet of $100 will net you $254, including your stake.

Odds for this parlay are +850 from DraftKings. That’s 8.5-to-1 odds, so even a modest $10 bet would win you $85. Or go all out for $100, and if the Tigers win, and Tork hits a dinger and another hit, you win $850.
