MLB odds, picks, and predictions: Tigers vs. Royals 9/28/23

The Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals might find themselves in a pitching duel on Thursday when they meet in the finale of this three-game series. That’s because young phenom Sawyer Gipson-Long will face KC’s Cole Ragans, who somehow has managed to go 6-1 after coming to the Royals in a deadline trade.

The Tigers are priced as modest favorites at -115, but the competitive pitching matchup has oddsmakers at Caesars hedging, as they list the Royals at -105. Sawyer Gipson-Long (1-0, 2.40 ERA, 20 K in 15 IP) vs. Cole Ragans (7-4, 3.31 ERA, 105 K in 89.2 IP)

This is the final chance for Tigers fans to see Gipson-Long on the mound this season. The lanky rookie right-hander from Georgia is opening a lot of eyes with his pitching since being given a rotation spot a little over two weeks ago. He’s only surrendered 4 ER in 15 innings in the big leagues. His stuff is wicked too: 20 K’s so far in a Detroit uniform in only three starts.

For Ragans, his switch from a Rangers uniform to a Royals one has been a transformation. He’s 5-1 for KC, with a 2.34 ERA in 11 starts. In seven of those assignments, Ragans has posted a quality start. This will be his first-ever start against Detroit. For the most part that typically gives the pitcher the advantage. We expect a low-scoring affair in the final game of this set.

Soon-to-be-retired Miguel Cabrera launched his 511th career home run on Wednesday. That four-bagger tied him with Mel Ott for 25th all-time. Miggy will likely be back in the lineup for Thursday’s regular game, to allow fans to see him during this special week. He’s hitting well of late, and don’t discount his chances at more hits (he had two yesterday, bringing his career total to 3,170)... KC designated hitter Nelson Velázquez has been raking: 4 HR in his last 6 games. If anyone can make us winners on our HR Prop Bet, it may be Velázquez.

Tigers +1.5 (-195, Caesars)

Odds experts are tempting Detroit fans in any way possible to wager on their remaining games this week in the Motor City. In this case, Caesars is giving you 1.5 runs and -195 odds on the DET/KC runline. That means a $195 bet and the Tigers winning outright or losing by one run will deliver $100 in winnings.

Any Run In 1st Inning: NO (-125, Caesars)

How about a second Bet of the Day pick? With the Tigers and Royals finishing a suspended game before Thursday’s regularly-scheduled contest, the two teams will be coming off short rest in the late afternoon. Advantage? Pitchers. Which is why “Any Run In 1st Inning? NO” is a solid game prop bet. The odds are -125, and if zeroes go on the Comerica Park scoreboard in inning #1, you’re a winner.

Grand Slam Home Run: YES (+1200, Caesars)

Sportsbooks do not have same-game parlay offerings on this game so close to publication, because of the suspended game’s potential impact on lineups and pitcher usage. But, we’ve pulled out a rare prop bet, one we haven’t wagered on this season.

In this Tigers bet, if a grand slam is hit (by either team) you win. A $100 winning bet will pay off to the amount of $1,200. Even a $20 bet would win you $240. Get these odds from Caesars MI sportsbook. No promo code is required to get the bonus bet they offer to new bettors.
