While Chicago has had its fair share of offensive struggles over the course of the season, they’ve seen the ball very well against left handers to this point. Through 434 at-bats against southpaws this season, the White Sox have posted a collective .770 OPS, 11th-best in baseball.
On the other hand, Detroit has really struggled to generate runs against right-handed pitchers like Kopech. Through 1,464 combined at-bats, the Tigers hold just a .650 OPS. This is the third-worst mark in the league.
With Kopech succeeding against lesser offenses as of late, we’d expect him to continue to display the next-level strikeout stuff that generated a ton of buzz around him as a prospect. If he can continue to force whiffs, the light-hitting Tigers offense will likely have a hard time putting runs on the board: they’ve hit just 32 home runs against righties this season (also the third-worst in the league).
Without the ability to hit the long ball, Detroit will need to scrape together hits and play a bit of small-ball – that’s incredibly hard to do when you’re striking out a lot. Entering his major-league debut, Micahel Kopech was one of the most-hyped pitching prospects in recent memory. With a 100+ MPH fastball and an electric slider, Kopech was expected to compete for Cy Young votes early on in his career as a strikeout machine. However, injuries and a stint as a reliever caused him to never surpass 120 innings in a season. Still, he maintained an elite K/9 rate whether as a starter or reliever.
This season, Kopech has seemingly started to put it all together. Though his ERA is still a relatively unsightly 4.52, that number is bloated by two early-season blow-up starts. He’s since gotten back on track, particularly over the month of May.
Over six starts in the month, Kopech surrendered 11 ER over 36 IP (2.75 ERA), notching three wins and striking out 43 batters. His strikeout numbers have spiked significantly over the past three starts, as he’s posted 10, nine and 10 punchouts over eight, seven and 4.1 innings.
With the Tigers’ lineup struggling to hit right-handed pitching and putting the ball in play in general (they’ve struck out the 10th-most times of any team), Kopech should be in line for another solid day in the strikeout department.
