The Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers will square off for the third game of their early-season set Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:40 PM ET. In the series opener, the Mariners defeated the Tigers 9-2. The Mariners have been somewhat disappointing through the first few weeks of the season, though the win on Friday brought them to an even 19-19 record.

On the other hand, the Tigers have been riding a solid hot streak lately after a very slow start and will look to further improve on their 17-20 overall record on Sunday. Below, we’ll provide our top Mariners vs. Tigers predictions and explain how you can qualify for DraftKings Sportsbook’s new-user promotion worth $150 in bonus bets.

In the series opener, the Mariners defeated the Tigers, 9-2, behind both a solid offensive performance and a good start from Marco Gonzales (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K). Offensively, eight out of the nine Mariners starters (every starter except A.J. Pollock) recorded a hit, with Ty France (2-4, 2 R, RBI, BB), Julio Rodriguez (3-5, 2 R, 4 RBI) and J.P. Crawford (1-4, 2 R, RBI, BB) leading the charge. Seattle also got three innings of combined shutout ball from their bullpen, with Trevor Gott, Justin Topa and Tayler Saucedo combining for 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R and 2 K.

The Tigers were snakebitten by their starting pitcher, Matthew Boyd, who surrendered 5 ER on 5 H and 4 BB over just 1.1 IP. Offensively, only Riley Greene recorded a multi-hit game (2-4), though he didn’t manage to account for any runs. Catcher Jake Rogers led the offensive charge, going 1-4 with a two-run HR that accounted for the Tigers’ complete offensive output.

We don’t expect much to be different in Sunday’s matchup. The Mariners are projected to start right-hander Logan Gilbert (1-2, 3.79 ERA, 0.99 WHIP) while the Tigers will go with lefty Joey Wentz (1-3, 6.09 ERA, 1.35 WHIP). This is a clear mismatch from a starting pitching standpoint: Gilbert is one of the top young pitchers in the game, while Wentz is a middle-of-the-road, back-end starter.

In Gilbert’s last start (against the Texas Rangers), he went 6.2 innings and surrendered 2 ER on 3 H and 1 BB, striking out 10. On the other hand, Wentz has given up nine runs over his last three outings.

Beyond the pitching mismatch, there’s a clear disparity in ability at the plate as well. Though the Tigers have been on a hot streak lately and have been particularly effective against left-handed pitching, they’ve struggled mightily against righties. In 989 at-bats against right-handers in 2023, the Tigers have posted a paltry .638 OPS, second-worst in the MLB. They’ve also struck out 269 times against righties, the sixth-most in the league.

With these factors in mind, our favorite of our Mariners vs. Tigers predictions is for the Mariners to cover the run line. While the money line odds may not be valuable enough to warrant an investment, we take the Mariners -1.5 runs (-110 at DraftKings).

With a relatively poor starting pitcher on the mound, we think there’s tons of value to be had with Mariner hitter props. As a result, our favorite player prop among our Mariners vs. Tigers predictions is for Ty France to record at least one hit. Over the past week, France has gone 11/23 (.478) with 4 R, 1 2B, 1 HR and 4 RBI.

Look for the Mariners’ infielder to stay hot against a middling Wentz on Sunday. This means one of our top Mariners vs. Tigers predictions is for France to record at least one hit, cashing with the prop set at 0.5; however, we’d also back his prop if it’s set at 1.5.

Another of our Mariners vs. Tigers predictions is for Logan Gilbert to continue his hot streak and cash in on his total strikeout prop. On the season, Gilbert has struck out 50 batters in 40.1 innings, and he struck out 10 batters in his last outing against a solid Rangers squad.

With the Tigers struggling badly against righties and continuing to strike out at a high clip, we think Gilbert should have no problem striking out at least six batters – over his last three starts, he hasn’t struck out fewer than six. We’d back the line from seven strikeouts down.
