Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea predictions

Graham Potter is on the brink.

The Chelsea hierarchy continues to insist it is taking a long-term view and will not be sacking the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager.

But after a dismal run of form, it is increasingly difficult to see how Potter can survive. A defeat this weekend could bring his tenure to an end after just over six months in charge.

There are some mitigating circumstances. Chelsea have been unfortunate with injuries in recent months. The influx of new signings in January means the squad is too big. Several players have underperformed, particularly when it comes to finishing chances.

But the buck ultimately stops with Potter. He is clearly a gifted coach, as demonstrated by his fine work at Brighton.

However, he does not seem to have won over either the players or the fans. And there are legitimate question marks over whether he has the personality to lead a club like Chelsea.

A 1-0 home defeat by Southampton last time out was the nadir. That means Potter’s team are 11 points adrift of the top four – and their upcoming opponents – as we head into the weekend.

With Chelsea in dire straits, Tottenham must take full advantage by emerging victorious on home turf.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea betting tips

Tottenham are back in the top four and will be aiming to stay there by getting the better of Chelsea in this London derby.

Tottenham to win – 31/20 (bet365)

Tottenham are one of the most unpredictable teams in the Premier League. You never really know which version will turn up.

Will it be the one that deservedly beat title favourites Manchester City at the start of the month?

Or will it be the one which slumped to a 4-1 defeat by Leicester City (a team they had thrashed 6-2 in the reverse fixture) less than a week later?

Tottenham are consistently inconsistent, but they are still on course to achieve their minimum objective this term.

A 2-0 victory over West Ham United last weekend saw Antonio Conte’s side climb into the top four for the first time this calendar year.

Manchester United have pulled clear in third, so there will probably be just one Champions League spot for the likes of Spurs, Newcastle United and Liverpool to fight over.

It is now Tottenham’s to lose. But a team that has not won three consecutive top-flight matches all season will need to become more reliable as we prepare to enter the final third of the campaign.

Chelsea’s performances have arguably been better than their results of late, but their struggles to put the ball in the back of the net means a home win is the most likely outcome in this one.

Under 2.5 goals – 4/5 (bet365)

Brighton’s major shortcoming under Potter was a failure to take their chances. The creation of opportunities was not usually an issue, but the conversion of them certainly was.

Curiously, that has been a problem at Chelsea too.

In their last five matches in all competitions, the Blues have taken 73 shots. Based on the expected goals data, they ‘should’ have scored almost eight goals from those chances. In fact, they have found the net just once.

Things would be worse if Chelsea’s defensive record was not so good. They have conceded just 23 times in 2022/23. Only Newcastle United’s backline has been breached less often.

Games involving the Blues do not usually feature many goals, which is why this bet looks like excellent value at its current price.

Ten of Chelsea’s last 11 matches in the Premier League have featured under 2.5 goals, the exception being a 2-1 loss to Fulham in the middle of January.

Meanwhile Tottenham’s meetings with fellow big-six sides tend to be tight affairs. Had they opened up against Manchester City a few weeks back, Spurs would probably have been beaten.

Similarly, their best chance of victory this weekend is by keeping a clean sheet – and that should not be too difficult given how much Chelsea have struggled going forward.

Harry Kane to score any time – 7/5 (bet365)

Erling Haaland and Marcus Rashford have rightly received an abundance of praise for their goalscoring exploits this season. The former is on course for a record-breaking campaign, while the latter is one of the most in-form players in Europe right now.

But perhaps because we are so accustomed to him scoring goals in the Premier League, Harry Kane’s contributions have gone a little under the radar.

Only Haaland (26) has more goals to his name than Kane (17), and the Norway international is playing in a much better team than England’s captain.

Son Heung-min was the joint-winner of the Golden Boot last term, but he has been below par this time around. The South Korean has found the net on just five occasions so far.

Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski have two goals between them, so Kane has at times had to carry the Tottenham attack.

The striker drew a blank against West Ham, which means he has now gone three games without a goal in all competitions.

But it is only a matter of time before he adds to his tally for the season – and Chelsea will have their hands full in dealing with him on Sunday.
