Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United predictions

Manchester United are up and running for the 2023/24 season thanks to a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in gameweek one.

Raphael Varane’s second-half header was enough to give United all three points. But aside from the result, there were few positives for Erik ten Hag to take from his team’s display on Monday.

Put simply, United were very lucky to emerge triumphant. Wolves were the superior side for much of the match. They registered 23 shots on goal - the most of any visiting team at Old Trafford since 2005.

Were they a little less wasteful in front of goal, United would have fallen behind. The hosts were also fortunate that their opponents were denied what looked like a clear-cut penalty in the closing stages.

United got away with one. It might just have been one of those nights for Ten Hag’s team. But the way Wolves continually exploited United’s defensive structure was hugely concerning.

On paper at least, United have got stronger over the summer. Former Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana is better equipped to fulfil Ten Hag’s demands than David de Gea.

Mason Mount is an upgrade on Scott McTominay in midfield and ex-Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund has a bright future ahead of him.

But Ten Hag has plenty of work to do on the collective balance of the team. Unless they get that right, United will struggle to get closer to the Premier League title this term.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United betting tips

Manchester United are the favourites but there is reason to believe this could be a tough afternoon for the visitors to the capital.

Tottenham to win - 15/8 (bet365)

Tottenham began the post-Harry Kane era with a 2-2 draw with Brentford last weekend.

It was a fair result on the balance of play and Spurs looked shaky defensively at times, but there were also positives for Ange Postecoglou to take from his first competitive game at the helm.

The impact of Kane leaving a couple of days before the match cannot be underestimated. Moreover, the Gtech Community Stadium is a tough place to go - Brentford only lost twice on home turf in 2022/23.

Tottenham played some bright, purposeful football during periods of the game. Yves Bissouma impressed at the base of midfield, as did summer signing James Maddison in a more advanced role.

It was far from a perfect performance, but it gives Postecoglou something to build on.

Just as important is the sense of togetherness - both within the team and between the players and the supporters - that Spurs’ new boss has already fostered.

The bookies fancy Manchester United in this one, but Tottenham look like good value at a price of 15/8.

Remember, United had a dismal away record in big games last term, collecting only one point from a possible 24 at the stadiums of the other teams that finished in the top nine.

With the backing of their supporters, Spurs can get off the mark here.

Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score - 5/6 (bet365)

As well as their away record, another of Manchester United’s shortcomings last season was their attacking return.

Ten Hag’s side scored 58 goals, only the joint-seventh most in the division. They finished on 30 fewer than Arsenal and 36 fewer than Manchester City.

The arrival of the aforementioned Hojlund may help in that regard, but it is important that the club does not put too much pressure on a 19-year-old who has less than 100 senior appearances to his name.

Hojlund is currently injured anyway, so Marcus Rashford will lead the line for United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With support provided by the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Antony, the Red Devils should be able to cause Spurs a few problems on the counter-attack.

Tottenham will also be reasonably confident of breaching United’s backline, especially if they can isolate Casemiro in the centre of the park.

Varane and Lisandro Martinez are excellent defenders but they were not afforded enough protection against Wolves.

All things considered, this is unlikely to be a cagey affair.

Tottenham to score first - 11/10 (bet365)

Only Crystal Palace and Arsenal picked up more points from losing positions than Tottenham last term.

There are two ways to look at that. In one sense, it suggests the side in question has resilience and character. On the other hand, it is hardly desirable to fall behind in matches on a regular basis.

On balance, it is probably a statistic that Postecoglou will not want to see repeated this season. The former Celtic head coach will want to see Spurs start quickly and score the first goal, as they did against Brentford last time out.

Manchester United have often been slow starters in recent years, and they hit the ground trudging in that meeting with Wolves on Monday.

The first goal of this game may well be scored by the home team, who will no doubt look to make a fast start in front of their own fans.
