Entertaining affair expected

Spurs play host to the Villans today, with Ange Postecoglou’s depleted side aiming to avoid a third consecutive top-flight loss.

The Lilywhites made a blistering start to the season before dramatic defeats to Chelsea and Wolves, but Villa – just one point worse off after 12 games – are likely to be dangerous opponents.

Tottenham’s previous home fixture in the Premier League ended in a chaotic 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in which Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were sent off for the hosts.

Spurs then conceded twice in added time to lose 2-1 at Wolves and Postecoglou must cope without several key players as the domestic league season resumes after the international break.

Romero and Yves Bissouma are suspended, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Richarlison are injured, and left back Udogie – available after a ban – is a fitness doubt.

Tottenham are strong at home, having beaten Manchester United, Sheffield United, Liverpool and Fulham on their own patch before the Chelsea defeat, but their weakened team may struggle to take maximum points today.

Visiting boss Unai Emery has worked wonders since taking charge last autumn, especially at Villa Park, where his charges have won their previous 13 league fixtures.

The Villans have been less impressive on the road, losing 2-0 at Nottingham Forest in their last away game, but they have the attacking talent to hurt a depleted home defence.

Tottenham have already drawn 2-2 with Brentford and Arsenal this season and that correct score is worth a bet this weekend.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa tip 1: 2-2 correct score @ 9/1 with Sky Bet

Porro in for tough contest

With Romero, Van de Ven and possibly Udogie all missing for Spurs, Pedro Porro could be the only one of Postecoglou’s first-choice back four to line up against Villa.

The attack-minded right back has been booked only once in the league this season, against Liverpool, but he should expect a tricky test against today’s in-form visitors.

Villa play with plenty of pace and intent down the flanks, with Moussa Diaby a particular threat, and their previous five league matches have featured yellow cards for four opposition full backs – Antonee Robinson (Fulham), Issa Kabore (Luton), Emerson (West Ham) and Nelson Semedo (Wolves).

Tottenham vs Aston Villa tip 2: Pedro Porro to be carded @ 15/8 with Sky Bet

McGinn can threaten

Goals should be on the cards at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs scored at least twice in nine of their first 10 league matches under Postecoglou before losing 4-1 to Chelsea and 2-1 to Wolves, and their defensive absentees increase the appeal of a bet on over 2.5 goals.

Boost the BuildABet odds by adding Villa’s Scottish ace John McGinn to score at any time. The midfielder has flourished in advanced roles for both club and country, finding the net in Scotland’s 3-3 draw with Norway last Sunday and scoring four times in his past eight appearances for the West Midlanders.

McGinn’s fellow midfielder Douglas Luiz came on as a substitute in Brazil’s tumultuous 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Argentina on Wednesday and he looks a likely candidate to be booked against Spurs.

Luiz was cautioned in five of his first 11 league and cup appearances this term and can expect a fiery midfield scrap with Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa tip 3: BuildABet – over 2.5 goals, John McGinn to score in 90 minutes and Douglas Luiz to be carded @ 22/1 with Sky Bet
