transfer news: Real Madrid and Newcastle close contenders at front of betting market
Cristiano Ronaldo made big waves in the transfer market before heading to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
The Portuguese forward could dominate the headlines this summer though, with rumours of a potential move back to Real Madrid or even Newcastle.
According to Betfair odds, a return to Real Madrid is the most likely in what would be a huge transfer for La Liga, with Lionel Messi also set to return to the league with Barcelona.
This move would see him come back to La Liga just five years after departing for Juventus, from Real Madrid in 2018.
He made nearly 300 appearances for the Spanish side in which he scored well over 300 goals.
Sporting Lisbon were keen on re-signing their star man in last summer's transfer window, where Ronaldo started his career, but couldn't work out a deal.
Ronaldo returning to where it all started in Portugal over 20 years ago isn't being ruled out at 6/1.
The 37-year-old spent his youth career with Andorinha and Nacional before breaking through the Sporting team between 1997 and 2003.
But most remarkable of all is the price for Newcastle at just 9/4.
The Magpies have already defied the odds and seemingly secured a top four spot in the Premier League and with Champions League football next season, they have the pulling power for all types of new players this summer.
In 2003, Manchester United signed Ronaldo after he made an impression from just 25 appearances.
He was integral for the Red Devils last season - without Ronaldo's goal involvements United would have finished the 2021-22 season just ten points above the relegation zone.
