There's been a lot of success from first-year head coaches. Some have suffered bumps.
Washington has been winning games all season. Jake Dickert has led Washington State to a 6-4 record in his first full season as head coach. Lincoln Riley is the coach of the first team in the Pac-12, USC. The Trojans are first in their conference with a 7-1 record. They lost only one game, to Utah. They are going to continue to recruit well. Their quarterback Caleb Williams is a star. It's possible that they can compete for a national title soon. Dan Lanning's Oregon team is second in Pac 12 with an 8-2 record, but they lost two games.
Mario Cristobal is the new coach of the Miami Hurricanes. Mike Elko is building a competitive program at Duke. Tony Elliott's Virginia team is struggling this season. Brent Pry's VT team has a 2-8 record. Sonny Dykes' TCU team could be the most successful year one in college football. TCU is currently the No. 1 team in the Big 12. They beat five ranked opponents. The team's coach is Dyke. He's had the best year in Big12. It's too early to tell if he'll have a short-term stay at the school. Virginia Tech is at 2,8.
Don Brown is the current head coach of UMass. The Minutemen haven't had more than one win since 2018. Notre Dame is rebuilding after Brian Kelly's departure. Jim Mora is bringing UConn back to respectability. Jerry Kill is improving New Mexico State's fortunes. The Aggies started the season losing five of their first six games. They hadn't won four or more games since 2017. Uconn is on a three-game winning streak. It's the first time since 2010 that the team has won more wins than losing.
Stan Drayton is taking over at Temple. SMU is building toward success. Sonny Cumbie is the new offensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech. Mike MacIntyre is improving the team at Florida International. Joe Moorhead is struggling at Akron. The Zips are 1-9 with their only win coming on September 1. They are averaging less than 20 points per game. The team has only had four winning seasons in its history. It was fielded its first FBS team in 2004. Butch Davis had some success in his first two seasons. He got a combined one win in 2020 and 2021.
Louisiana is looking for a new head coach after Billy Napier left for Florida. Georgia Southern has had five different head coaches since 2014. Troy is first in the Sun Belt with an 8-2 record. Timmy Chang is not going to turn around the fortunes of Hawai'i. Colorado State is back in a coaching search after firing Steve Addazio. Jeff Tedford is doing well at Fresno State. The Rams haven't had success since 2017 under Mike Bobo. They need to focus on bringing in help from the transfer portal. It's been more than a decade since Hawai’i was a consistent winner.
