Vermont prepares for online sports betting launch ahead of 2023 NFL playoffs

Vermont is gearing up for the launch of online sports betting before the NFL playoffs, with the Department of Liquor and Lottery (DLL) taking the lead. Governor Phil Scott recently signed the VT sports betting law, paving the way for up to six online sportsbooks to operate in the state.

The DLL Commissioner, Wendy Knight, is optimistic about a January launch, which would be an ambitious timeline for Vermont’s first venture into the world of gambling. While other states took around 17 months to launch after legalization, Vermont hopes to benefit from the experiences of its counterparts and expedite the process.

The DLL is actively preparing for the launch, with the first proposed enhanced procedures set to be reviewed during the regulator’s upcoming meeting on July 12. This will be followed by the release of requests for proposals in mid-July, giving potential bidders an opportunity to review and submit their proposals. The DLL aims to finalize contracts by December to meet the January launch target.
