Vermont readies itself for online sports betting launch prior to NFL playoffs

In anticipation of the NFL playoffs, which is amongst the top sports betting draws nationwide every year, Vermont is actively preparing for the introduction of online sports betting, led by the Department of Liquor and Lottery (DLL). Governor Phil Scott recently endorsed the VT sports betting law, establishing the groundwork for up to six online sportsbooks to operate within the state.

With an ambitious goal in mind, DLL Commissioner Wendy Knight is optimistic about a January launch, marking Vermont’s first foray into the realm of gambling. While other states took approximately 17 months to launch after legalization, Vermont aims to benefit from the knowledge and experiences of its counterparts, streamlining the process.

The DLL is diligently making arrangements for the upcoming launch. The regulator’s upcoming meeting on July 12 will entail a review of the first proposed enhanced procedures. Subsequently, in mid-July, requests for proposals will be released, allowing potential bidders to thoroughly evaluate and submit their proposals. The DLL aims to finalize contracts by December, ensuring readiness for the targeted January launch.
