The Wake Forest Demon Deacons visit the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia. This game tips at 5:30 p.m. and has major implications as we near the end of conference play and head toward the 2024 ACC Tournament, which takes place in Washington D.C. beginning March 12.

Keep in mind that North Carolina online sports betting apps officially take wagers on March 11, which means those inside the state will be able to register with North Carolina betting apps and wager on the action as March Madness heats up.

Until then, you can still register for NC sportsbook pre-launch bonuses:

Wake Forest vs. Virginia Tech odds, preview and picks - March 2 college basketball

According to Bracketology from Joe Lunardi, Wake Forest is on the good side of the bubble with just a couple of regular season games remaining. The Deacs are in the "last four byes" section, and such position could keep them out of the play-in games on the Tuesday and Thursday before the NCAA Tournament, if they can remain there. But Wake still needs wins and has not looked its best outside of Winston-Salem.

Ever since it’s big win over rival UVA on Feb. 19, Virginia Tech suffered bad losses to both Syracuse and Pittsburgh. That said, both of those were on the road and Tech is 9-5 ATS at home this season, so it won’t be a cakewalk for a Wake team that has only covered three times in 10 road games.

The Deacs did handle Virginia Tech with ease early in conference play, but they lost a winnable game at Notre Dame on the road earlier in the week and have won just a single away contest in the last eight dating back to Jan. 9.

The fact that Wake "needs" this game doesn’t mean much since they needed to beat Notre Dame on Tuesday and couldn’t do it. That said, there are some significant advantages it holds over Tech that have us considering taking the team with everything to play for.

The Deacs excel shooting and defending the 3 (8th and 15th nationally, according to Haslametrics) and while the Hokies are serviceable with its 3-point numbers, there are other issues.

They rank 130th nationally in defending the mid-range and 238th in defending near proximity baskets. Wake Forest ranks 18th in mid-range offense and also 49th at near proximity field-goal percentage.

We can look at numbers all day, and they’ll all favor Wake. But Demon Deacons have not proven they can put it all together in a true road game and Va. Tech has already played spoiler at home this season.

North Carolina Sports Betting March 2024

Online sports betting is coming to North Carolina on March 11 and as of March 1, pre-registration will be live. This means you can sign up for various North Carolina sportsbook apps and reserve your NC sports betting signup bonuses. In most cases, the bonuses are more generous if you register before the official start date.

With NC online sports betting going live just in time for the 2024 ACC Tournament and the larger NCAA Tournament, there will be a considerable buzz around North Carolina betting apps such as Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, Bet365 and BetMGM.

North Carolinians will be able to wager on all ACC and NCAA Tournament games, including ones featuring Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest and other in-state programs. A huge range of professional sports will be available along with local teams such as the Carolina Hurricanes and Charlotte Hornets. The Carolina Panthers will become a huge part of the North Carolina betting scene in the fall when the NFL arrives, as will collegiate football programs around the state.

While retail sports betting in North Carolina was legalized in 2019, NC online sports betting was officially signed into law on June 14, 2023 by Governor Roy Cooper. Initial plans called for a January 2024 launch, but delays pushed the project past the Super Bowl before plans were drawn up for March.

With a huge betting menu and an open market featuring multiple sportsbooks, the Tar Heel State is projected to take in $7 billion worth of bets in the first year as the industry creates a new stream of tax revenue for the state.
