Arsenal can inflict Hammer blow

West Ham have endured a torrid time since the international break, with a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Everton on Sunday making it three losses in a row.

The last thing the Hammers need is a visit from an Arsenal side who are unbeaten domestically this season.

Both outfits are likely to make changes at the London Stadium, given their hectic schedules, but it is the Gunners who have more firepower in reserve.

The Carabao Cup is a great opportunity for Arsenal to win another piece of silverware under Mikel Arteta, with Manchester City already knocked out, so he should field a side strong enough to get the job done.

Arsenal are unbeaten in their past seven matches against West Ham – and at better than evens to win, they are an attractive price to progress to the quarter-finals in 90 minutes.

Steady Eddie the man

One player who is likely to start at the London Stadium is Eddie Nketiah, as Gabriel Jesus is still injured.

The 24-year-old repaid Arteta’s faith in him with a hat-trick against Sheffield United in the Gunners’ 5-0 win at the weekend.

As he has spent most of his career as an understudy, Nketiah has enjoyed his previous outings in the Carabao Cup.

The striker has 11 goals in 13 appearances in the competition, including five in five when Arsenal reached the semi-finals in 2021-22.

West Ham have not kept a clean sheet in their past five across all competitions so Nketiah should be confident of continuing his fine run in the Carabao Cup.

Nelson can win the battle

On West Ham’s left side, Emerson is likely to come up against Reiss Nelson as the winger looks to impress in some rare minutes.

Emerson missed the defeat to Everton on Sunday as he was suspended after picking up five yellow cards in the first nine games.

The 29-year-old is known for his attacking prowess but is averaging a caution every other game this season, and he could pick up another against Arsenal.

Nelson’s only start this season came in the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Brentford in the previous round, where he was fouled three times.

The Englishman also won a direct free kick in a 17-minute cameo against Sheffield United at the weekend so poses a real threat to West Ham.

Simon Hooper, the referee for the London Stadium clash, averages 4.4 yellow cards per game so it would be no surprise to see him dish one out to Emerson.
