Western Kentucky massacred South Alabama 44-23 in last year’s New Orleans Bowl and will try to replicate that success in Charlotte, North Carolina vs. Old Dominion.

The Hilltoppers and Monarchs square off in a Monday standalone game scheduled to kick off at 1:30 p.m. CST. WKU is 6-3 in bowl matchups in the previous 11 seasons and aims to finish 2023 with an 8-5 record.

Western Kentucky started the season 2-0 before a devastating but unsurprising 63-10 defeat to Ohio State. The Hilltoppers squared off with another top-tier team in Liberty, resulting in a 42-29 setback.

Luckily for WKU, Old Dominion is far from the cream of the crop. The Monarchs are .500 and snuck into bowl season with a walk-off touchdown in Week 13 to earn its sixth victory.

The Hilltoppers will be shorthanded in the Famous Toastery Bowl, as three starting offensive linemen have entered the transfer portal. It’s also unclear if Malachi Corley (958 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns) will play, though Corley has yet to indicate he’ll be sitting out.

If Corley suits up, WKU will have a decisive advantage offensively, considering ODU ranked second-worst in scoring and third-worst in passing in the Sun Belt. The Monarchs had a strong year defensively, but it’s difficult to envision its offense managing to keep pace on Monday afternoon.

Hilltoppers’ QB Austin Reed’s 31 touchdowns were the sixth-most in FBS, and his 3,340 passing yards ranked 17th. Interceptions were an issue for Reed, and he must limit costly mistakes to lead Western Kentucky to victory.

WKU scored just under 30 points per game this season but isn’t at full strength with multiple offensive linemen inactive.

Old Dominion has the second-worst scoring offense in the Sun Belt, throwing for only 200 yards per game. The Monarchs will likely lean on its ball carriers vs. a WKU defense that hasn’t been able to stop the run, creating a solid formula for an under.
