What KenPom projects for Memphis Tigers basketball in 2023-24

Memphis Tigers basketball has been slotted at No. 32 in KenPom's overall preseason rankings.

Coach Penny Hardaway's team, picked to finish second in the AAC in the preseason poll, was 20th in KenPom's final rankings last season.

Started in 2004, KenPom.com has become one of the leading advanced analytics tools for college basketball fans, media members and coaches.

The Tigers were 26-9 last season and reached the NCAA tournament, bowing out in the first round to FAU. The Owls, in their first season in the AAC, were voted the preseason favorite to win the conference. They are ranked 37th in KenPom's preseason pecking order.

KenPom, which employs scores of data and complex algorithms to come up with its projections, predicts Memphis will be favored in all but three games this season — at Missouri (Nov. 10), at Texas A&M (Dec. 10) and at FAU (March 9).

Despite the favorable outlook from an odds standpoint against a daunting nonconference schedule, the Tigers' final regular-season overall record is projected to be 22-7 (with a 14-4 mark in the AAC). KenPom factors only the first game of an MTE (a multi-team event, such as the Battle 4 Atlantis), which is why the projected record is two games short.

Memphis is a projected 7-seed in ESPN's latest preseason bracketology.

The Tigers' first exhibition game is set for Oct. 29, while the regular season begins Nov. 6, when Memphis will host Jackson State at FedExForum.
