Real Madrid vs Chelsea history

This season is the third successive campaign these two foes have faced each other in Champions League action, with mixed results on either side as part of their eventual success in the competition.

Thomas Tuchel's Blues beat Zinedine Zidane's Madrid side in the 2020/21 Champions League semifinals thanks to a 2-0 second-leg win at Stamford Bridge, before going on to beat Manchester City in the final.

However, their matchup in last season's quarterfinals added a new dimension to the rivalry, as Real Madrid produced a trademark comeback in thrilling style.

Karim Benzema's superb hat-trick sealed a 3-1 first-leg win in London, but they simply folded in the return fixture, as Chelsea powered into a 3-0 lead with 10 minutes left in Madrid.

The calmness of Ancelotti and his veteran stars was tested to the extreme in the closing minutes, as substitute Rodrygo sent the game into extra time, and the irrepressible Benzema clinched a wild turnaround.

That proved to be a crucial platform for Ancelotti as they created more historic drama with another unbelievable comeback against City in the semifinals, before beating Liverpool in the final.
