In the modern sports landscape, many professional teams have sponsorship deals with a variety of companies. But one specific type of company stands out in the UK, and that is betting companies. From the Premier League and right through the football pyramid, many football clubs have partnered with betting firms and bookmakers.

Of course, it would seem to make sense as the two industries are intertwined with each other. Whilst football continues to attract more and more viewers, betting companies can benefit from the additional exposure. On the other hand, some clubs are supported by their fans through gambling activities.

In fact, in the Premier League alone, there are eight clubs that have gambling companies as their main shirt sponsor, making the gambling industry have the lion's share of the league at 40%. Financial services come second with five partnerships, while four other market and industry sectors take up the final six sponsorships. Nottingham Forest are the only team without a sponsor this season, as they look to get the best deal possible.

Let's look at some of these partnerships and what they mean for the clubs involved.

Everton

While Everton may be struggling on the pitch in recent seasons, they are still one of the biggest clubs in English football. They currently have a sponsorship partnership with Stake.com, a PayPal casino that also allows players to be able to play casino games as well as place sports bets all in one destination. It should be noted that clubs such as Watford are also sponsored by the bookmaker, too.

West Ham United

West Ham United are currently sponsored by Betway; one of the biggest betting platforms currently available to punters all around the world. Indeed, it is one that has managed to achieve a global reputation, and this is perhaps due to the fact that like Stake.com, Betway offers players the chance to play casino games as well as bets on their favourite sporting events.

Newcastle United

Things have certainly been improving for Newcastle United since the takeover as the club has continued to go from strength to strength under the guidance of the Suadi ownership and Eddie Howe's management. The Magpies are another team in the Premier League to be benefiting from a gambling partnership, with Fun88 being their main shirt sponsor for this season.

Fulham & AFC Bournemouth

Both Fulham and AFC Bournemouth are no strangers to the Premier League, although this season is the first year that they have been able to come back; both bouncing back at the first time of asking, too. The Cottagers are currently sponsored by W88, while the Cherries host Dafabet on the front of their shirts, with each of these betting companies continuing to enjoy an emergence as top operators within the industry, and their exposure on the shirts will have helped.

Final Thoughts

While we have only looked at the Premier League, there are examples throughout the English and UK football pyramids of partnerships whereby football clubs are being sponsored by betting companies. While it can be somewhat controversial for many, there is no doubt that these partnerships appear to be what is best for both industries given the exposure they can both receive.
