United to click and collect victory
There can be no excuses for United and their beleaguered manager Erik ten Hag if they fail to make smooth progress into the fourth round. Beaten finalists last June, they have reached at least the quarter-finals in eight of the previous nine seasons.
As a Premier League team, Wigan lifted the trophy in 2013, and they reached the semi-finals as a Championship club the following season. They began this season’s campaign in round one and have seen off fellow League One side Exeter City and York City of the National League to set up this tie.
Shaun Maloney’s side are 18th in the third tier, although they would be ninth but for an eight-point deduction for failing to cover their wage bill. After a run of nine wins (one on penalties) and two draws from 12 games in all competitions, their most recent six matches have yielded just five points.
Not that United’s current form is anything to write home about. Their only win in the past six outings was the dramatic 3-2 victory over Aston Villa in which they recovered from 2-0 down.
But although Wigan have won seven of their 12 home league games this season, Barnsley, Charlton, Portsmouth and Derby have all won at the DW Stadium and United should be able to follow suit.
They are 2/9 to win the game and 4/6 to win by more than one goal, so to target a better payout, it could be worth taking them to click and win by three or more goals at 7/4.

Wigan’s defence has been breached by Port Vale, Reading, Barnsley and Derby County in their games since mid-December and United’s expensive collection of creative players such as Bruno Fernandes, Antony, Christian Eriksen, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford, can open up the home side.
United have been at their most dangerous outside the Premier League this season, scoring 12 goals in six Champions League games, while their defence should be up to fending off a Wigan outfit who have registered only five goals across their previous six games.

The first leg of this BuildABet selection is for Rashford to be among the United goalscorers. He has found the net only three times for his club this season (and once for England) but he did score the equaliser in last week’s 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest.
It would be no surprise if the assist for Rashford’s goal, or another United strike, comes from key man Fernandes, so that is the second leg of this bet. Fernandes has three assists in the Premier League this season and two more in the Champions League and should be free to get forward tonight.
The final leg is for Wigan defender Sean Clare to pick up a yellow card in the game. The defender regularly has his name added to the referee’s notebook, having been booked in four of his previous five games before managing to stay out of trouble against Barnsley on New Year’s Day.
Clare was also cautioned in four successive games in late September and early October and he could easily get frustrated again by the skilful United attackers.
